As for the anime, you have to see by yourself whether the anime made him the real Char or not. At this point, nobody knows whether they will follow the source novel closely or not.

Judging by the trailers, Zimmermen is about to be blasted by Angelo, but I am guessing he is saved because Angelo's suit is missing the right arm which Angelo used to attack Zimmerman with.

Looks like it's still in bad shape though, with only 2 out of the four binders, and one of the remaining two seems to be in bad shape.
