I like to think Alto died a few weeks later from starvation and dehydration, with his final hours spent in a delirium over missed opportunities, as he dies a virgin. His body is picked apart and recycled as biomass for the Vajra colony, and he lives on as pieces of wall, ceilings, and other structural parts.
Sheryl eventually wakes from her coma, after intensive therapy using Ranka's blood. She buckles under the stresses of waking up months-nay, let's go with years-later, with the battle and Alto's sacrifice, and the loss of Grace, still fresh in her memory, while the world has left her behind. Ranka, a full grown woman now, tries to help Sheryl come to terms with this new life of hers, but Sheryl has spent all the emotional and mental reserves she's had, and slowly withers away as she increasingly finds less willpower to cling to life. A few months after Sheyrl awakes, she goes to sleep and never wakes up. Ranka never gets over that period of her life, and never allows herself to love again. She channels her feelings into song, and lives to a ripe old age. Alone. The end. Give me a couple hundred thousand dollars, and I'd make that epilogue OVA.
