DVD audio question

I noticed that some anime dvds have the english track in 5.1 audio but the japanese in only 2.0. Why is that the case?

If that is the case then the sound was most likely 2.0 originally, and made into 5.1 for the US release.

Companies are too lazy to remix the existing track into 5.1, also the audio cannot be manipulated as easily since they do not have all the original sound elements.

Most companies like to provide us with audio tracks that mirror the Japanese release. If the Japanese didnt have a 5.1 track, then (unless your manga ent) then they wont go creating that track. There was some uproar when Noir came out sporting a 5.1 Japanese track, as people didnt think the japanese created it, but they did.
