I did mention before Soma might not be able to easily challenge or beat top level 2nd years and 3rd years.

But thinking about that more, it seems Soma's generation is a golden one type. Look at the number of high scores in the prelimins after saying 50 or 60 are good to pass in some years.

He was able to steal Erina's guests because he was showing of his cooking and most of the people there already tasted Erina's dish there was no indication that Souma's dish was tastier then Erina.

Souma's talent might be better then her but currently his skill level isn't. At best he's around her level.

Cooking is at it's base subjective, and one can improve a dish with just a slight change. Just because Souma lost to Alice and Hayama this time doesn't mean that he's in a completely different skill tier then they are. They're all close to each other in skill level so the match between them would be up to grabs.

I don't see anything in this chapter that indicated that Hayama made Souma his bitch. If anything it established that Souma is his match.

but here is the thing, we don't even know if alice was trying her very best or not this time and she pretty much beat everyone. souma on the other hand was trying his very best to best someone who he challenge, this is not the case for alice. Her attitude point toward her having no need and no worry at all, so for all we know she use like 85 percent of her skill for the first round, while souma uses 100% and still lose, so him beating her in the final without any magical improvement would be consider bs.

Despite everyone's complaints, it didn't look like Souma is taking this as a major loss. Also, I found the judges's reaction to Souma's dish to be hilarious.

Souma learns from failure, so every loss counts as experience because he knows what to avoid and what he can do to make the dish better. By the end of this manga, he'll have a really impressive repertoire of knowledge and skill, gained from not just his own experience but the dishes of his opponents as well. Souma's specialty is being a well rounded cook since he helps his father run a specialty of the day shop - his strength is being able to cook many things, not just one type like the others are specialized in. Whoever goes up against him will have to top that if they want to beat him. He is almost a cooking god in the making.

For someone who doesn't specialize in curry...to be a point under Hayama who is a curry expert, that is pretty damn impressive, and I think a lot of people around Souma, including Erina who is such an elitist, recognize how capable he is because he was able to get such a score. If curry was all Souma cooked, I'm betting Hayama would be in the dust by now.

I agree, I find it very odd that people stated that losing to Hayama means Souma's work is a failure. Souma is well rounded, he does not have a specialty like curry or scents like Hayama. Souma is a great chef with an impressive learning curve. Majority of the students, even Alice and Erina, were expose to up scaled cooking and had influences and prestige to gather the best learning resources around them. Souma had his father whom I believe learnt most of his skills from simple advice and observation than actual teaching.

Also, regarding people stating Alice isn't worried about these competitions. No matter what personality Alice has, she is not a real chef if she does not take challenges seriously. She is serious with all her dishes and put in her best effort despite her aloof personality.

I think it will be Block A vs Block B for the main tournament or maybe a mixture.

My prediction:

Kurokiba (Alice's aide) vs Hisako (Erina's aide): indirect duel between Erina and Alice.

Takumi vs Souma: the last time it was a tie, there were hints in the previous chapters + competition between the both.

Megumi vs Hayama: souma will probably have a duel against Hayama and Alice in the next rounds, so hayama vs alice is very unlikely.

Alice vs new guy (likely Eizan's aide)

Next round:

Hayama vs Souma
Alice vs Hisako

Final:

Alice vs Souma

I repeat it once again: Curry guy was not convinced that he "totally PWNED" Souma.

Why are people assuming such strange things? The scene was awkward for both of them, so much that they seemed to completely forget about their competetition. They just couldn't take the judges' viewpoints as referees for their contest anymore. At least for me it looked like that.

Also a lot of people seem to be missing the point: Saying that the scores are the author's way of tellings us the "power levels" of the contestants seems wrong, considering that this chapter threw the fact into our faces that the judges' personal preferences are making the difference, not the micro-differences between the cooks' cooking skills!



So the last guy had 91 points and became 4th, right? He had lower scores than Souma, for the entrance of a "new bad guy" that seems a bit unusual, because usually new villains somehow get more points than the protagonists or at least an equal amount, to make them look more dangerous.

So, guess what I spent the morning doing?

Making the Aldini Tomato Curry Calzone!



Now, I made some touch of my own, since I don't have the skillset of the Aldini brothers.
I did keep the most important part though, use only the water from tomatoes.

Brief instructions.... (with pics)

Part 1 - the sauce

Spoiler:

1. Thaw a loaf of frozen bread bun (room temperature thawing can take 3 hours, I shortended it by defrosting in the microwave for 2min, and thawing for 1 hr)
2. simmer tomatoes in a cook pot. When the skin is loose, peel them off and put the tomatoes back in the pot. (squeeze the skin for extra tomato-y water!). Make tomato sauce as usual, but you can leave out spices since we're adding curry. I did use some garlic and herbs though.
3. Dice some onions, fry them with sausage, and add to the pot.
4. Add curry (I used curry roux since that's easiest, but you can use curry powder + flour as well)

Part 2 - the bun

Spoiler:

1. Split the thawed bun into 1/3 (one meal)
2. Stretch it with a roller
3. Add the sauce
4. Top some mozzarella cheese and pepperoni
5. Fold it, and press the closed edges with fork for patterns
6. Brush beaten eggs on top of the bun. I also sprinkled a bit of mozzarella to give crusty baked cheese.

It was awesome. Very tomato, yet very curry.
I didn't post the amount of ingredient or recipe because I kinda cook by feeling and add as I go.

Extremely unlikely. Dreadlocks Ape is clearly Eizan's 'dragon/aide' who is sent to defeat Souma. There's no in-story rationale that he would be introduced as this mystery entry, only to be wrecked by Alice in the first elimination.

I don't know how the tournament brackets will be laid out, but I'd think it's a good guess that these 3 will be part of the Best 4.

1. Alice (Erina's rival and arguably the strongest non-Elite 10 freshman)
2. Souma ( main character plot armor )
3. Dreadlocks Ape ( the mid-boss of this arc, needs to beat someone strong to prove his threat and credibility for when he faces Souma in the semi-finals )
4. no idea.

Who I think will be eliminated at the quarter-finals.

1. Hayama ( he's proven his worth, and is now established as a worthy rival. He's also already fought in his best specialty, so imo he's the best character to get jobbed to dreadlocks atm )
2. Megumi ( I don't see how she can beat any of the remaining 7 without an asspull. I'd say she pulls an admirable match against either Alice, Kurokiba or Hisako and garners respect from the top-tier )
