Tail Star
Mangaka: OKAMA
Serialized in Ultra Jump Age range: Seinen Genre: Fantasy, Action, Tragedy MU profile: http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=74163 Fantasy setup: The world used to be ruled by a Queen of Light and a Queen of Darkness. The Light lost. A massive empire now rules the planet, and it seeks to punish one of its small outlying territories for its defiance. The survivors of that territory must now challenge the Queen of Darkness on their own. The fighting in this manga is pretty imaginative so far, and the art is superb. So far this manga is a constant despair event horizon. It's also pretty tough in its depictions of brutality and destruction. If you like your dark stuff but don't want much psychological horror, this is it. |

I thought it was going to be just another Shounen Jump style manga. It's got some of the typical tropes and trappings you'd expect from stories like Naruto and One Piece. I got the same feeling when I tried reading the first few chapters of Fairy Tail. Tail Star too felt the same way for about a quarter of the first chapter....... and then the queen of darkness literally buried all resemblance between this and typical shounen manga.
This manga is AWESOME. It's dark, the hero has the usual hidden strength but he's still vastly outclassed. And the good guys have suffered hideously and are in an extremely tight and desperate situation. And it's so, so grim. I don't think I've ever seen so many side characters you think would stick with the hero get killed off so fast and in such depressing ways. I need more of this. This is my new oxygen. And this MUST become popular and become animated some day. PS: One more thing I love about this manga. The hero's goal is not to defeat the evil bad. The evil bad in this manga is practically a goddess and cannot be killed, much less challenged, by anything less than another goddess. The hero's goal is to basically just desperately buy enough time for the good goddess to awaken. I like this change of goal.

Is this how classic shounen used to be? Somehow I get this retro-classic feeling about it. Like, big stories, big adventures, big, despairing challenges, villains which are straightforward evils. Centered around a tiny little boy.
Either way it kicks arse. |

THIS. YES. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I forgot this manga and I was trying to find it for the past few days.
Ugh, I need to catch up. Edit: I can't find any new translated chapters.
