Really like the new character designs and the PV looks great!

I may need to go back and re-watch the last couple of episodes of S1 to refresh my memories but so hyped that this series is getting a second season. Really liked the first season.

No, I think it's been stated that this will be a sequel.

I hope this series adapts the last D.Gray-man novel where they reveal somethings about Allen.

Also, I wonder if Ayumu Murase could pull a young Allen besides the teenager one

Given how well Ayumu was able to do Rui in Gatchaman Crowds, as well as voicing the title character Joker in Mysterious Joker, I think he'll be able to do it just fine. Still wish it was his original voice actress that did him in the original (as well as the recent J-Stars game for PS3/4), but Ayumu is a really good choice for Allen, given his range.

Would there be any added benefits story wise over watching the old anime verses just reading the manga? I'm leaning towards reading over watching since I could do so must faster.

Fillers in the old anime help fleshing out relationships and expanding backstory for a few side characters which aren't very significant to the plot. So you're fine just reading the manga.

Thanks! Looks like I'll stick to the manga then.

I think the first anime was made by the same guys who developed the two Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas OVAs which added more background to the manga characters.

Also, I heard the first D.Gray-man 50 episodes also adapt the light novels. From episode 51, it's more or less close to the manga.

My bad, as I did not check my old post so I said something kind of incorrect, what I really meant is the expanded material in the old anime for the side characters didn't matter much as people can understand the main plot from the manga just fine.

One cour is perfect for just the Alma arc. With how slow the new chapters are coming out, it's not like one should expect more than that.

Spoiler for Manga spoilers:

Also, I would wish Hoshino returned to the monthly basis. What was her problem for going on hiatus?

Well...could have just kept forgetting about the show in that case.

It's like an old friend comes by to stick their head in the window to wave at you before disappearing forever.

Disappointing, but oh well. Barely expect more than one cour for anything these days. Everyone is just that conservative that a 2 cour show is actually a shocking occurrence.

Given how things are going nowadays, and the flow of money, it's not surprising.
