I found myself doing something I almost never do and just skipping ahead. When do we get to a part that's not paint by the number magic battle shounen, only with an especially loud protagonist? (And, so far, really lame fights.)

Episode 2 had pros and cons to it. On the positive side....young Asta's voice was actually more tolerable. So that wasn't a bad thing. But on the downside we end last week setting up for a fight....and then spend 17 minutes of the second episode on a flashback before getting back to that fight . I suppose it wasn't much of a fight since he just swung the sword twice. But honestly I'd have finished that fight first and then found a better way to slip in the flashback.

But yeah just a kind of simple and basic episode. I don't think it was straight up bad, but not much else to say about it either.

Episode 2 was pretty boring.

Also, he has a pretty dumb reason for wanting to spend his life on an probably impossible task. Ultimately he is doing it for his own ego, right?

I didn't think the two guys were going to buddy together, I assumed Mr. Best Friend was going to fly out into the distance and the MC was going to chase after him.

Also, this is making me want to re-read Mx0.

OK, I missed the ep at first but I finally went back and watch it. And honestly, my judgment hasn't changed, but I realized I forgot to make something clear.

Again with this episode everything was cliché and paint-by-numbers cookie-cutter content that we've seen over and over with messages we've seen before and a personality that amounts to little more than "I'm weak and pathetic but I'm not giving up at anything because I want to prove that even the weakest can be strong", roughly. It's cheesy and sappy and it's all been done before.

But I'll have you know, I still watch Dragon Ball Super and have recently started racing through Academia. Because there's a reason we get so much cheese, and like it or not it's the same reason we get so many cliché and cheesy harem series. Sometimes, there's certain kinds of cheese that we just love, cheese that can legitimately satisfy almost on its own. This so far, like so many other Shounen action battle series, seems to be no less cheesy, to be no more unique, and to have no more personality than any other series that's done and tone again ad infinitum. But that doesn't mean all that much; if it hits the right chords with me, or with any of you, I'm sure it'll remain on that watch list for seasons to come.

Anyway, as for the recent episode itself. A few more obvious points, which I partly guessed before. The Demon whose defeat earned the first Magic Emperor his title is going to return, and it'll almost definitely be Asta. There's some small possibility that somehow Yuno will be it, but I doubt it. In some series this would end with Asta demanding his own death before he loses control, or Asta suddenly becoming the actual villain and Yuno having to fight him. I doubt that'll happen here though. Either he'll manage to master the demon within, much like Naruto and I don't know how many other heroes with inner demons, or it'll turn out that the "demon vs. Magic Emperor" legend was a lot more complicated than modern history claims, and the rivals will wind up temporarily on opposite sides of a huge issue, with Asta taking the ugly "demonic" side while Yuno takes the "good" side that will ultimately turn out to be either wrong or incomplete. If so, we may even have them ultimately join forces and figure out a "right" path. But whatever happens, there will almost certainly be some period of time when Asta is labeled as a demon.

The actual reason will be explained unless you want me to drop it here.

I think the OVA did a much better job with the flow of events than the first 2 episodes. i noticed they cut some scenes from the OVA out and just rearranged same scene to make it "different" for the TV series, which made the overall flow bad.

That was extra.

And even if it wasn't, there are way easier and more effective ways to do that right? Rather than doing literally the most difficult thing in the world to do.

My reaction to this entire episode is just like Yuno's: holding my ears away from Asta's curse of a voice. Not giving up is his way of the ninja "magic" and he just HAS TO scream it at the top of his lungs!

I really hoped we'd get the over-the-top screams out of the way with this week's episode, but I had never imagined they'd make the flashback a full episode. This is also the first time an anime episode is actually behind the manga chapters (ep.2 ends where ch.2 begins), so...assuming this is only one cour, I'm highly disappointed =/

You're right, I skimmed over some of them. Fair enough.

I won't be continuing with the anime. I was curious after seeing Black Clover consistently rank higher than Boku no Hero Academia in WSJ (Boku no Hero's also standard shonen fare, but it's amusing, and almost everything clicked with me), so I went and read over fifty chapters, and it ended up being a bit of a chore to get through. It's not a bad series per se, but the humor doesn't work for me, and while there are a handful of decent side characters, overall none of them feel very charismatic. I also find the writing and plot pretty average for a shonen series. Usually that's okay if series make up for it in charm, but that was lacking as well, so I'll exit here and stop raining on people's parade.

I'm giving this up to episode 3 only. So far the first 2 seems quite boring and a loud-mouth main character is something that annoys me very much.

Wow, the pacing of this show is bad, awfully slow so far. They can easily condense some of the story already but for three episodes, they just barely begin their journey.

Asta has became my least favorite main character this season for his personality and loud voice. It seems he spends at least half the time yelling.

Well the third episode and this is the first time that I gave up an anime because the protagonist's voice is too loud and annoying, Asta's voice and personality are too much for me, but what's more important the plot and characters are too cliché to make me curious and it isn't good enough to overlook his horrible voice. RIP Black Clover.

With normal adaptation (2-3 chapters per episode) with three episodes the first mission would have already begun. Instead even the exam has not begun.

Spoiler for episodes 3-6 titles:

So from Episode 4 one episode->one chapter? are they serious? I just forgot that the pierrot co. is fanatical of fillers.

You know guys, I work at a factory that produces stretch film. I can stretch it all the way up to 300%, but apparently studio Pierrot needs to give me a lesson on some GOOD HARD STRETCHING OF SOURCE MATERIAL!

As much as I like Black clover, I won't keep watching it like this. I'll wait till it's over and half-skip the padding that each episode is doomed to have. What a waste of a cour...

Eh, I've seen so many series where they try to rush through material to get somewhere that seeing a series slow down is almost novel.

Frankly, I didn't dislike this bit of filler. It wasn't exciting, but it did flesh out some characters that were pretty much one note in the manga, which was nice.

So I watched the first three episodes.

This... is this season's big thing, right? Someone told me it's this season's big thing. I don't feel very impressed though. Intrigued enough to want to know what happens next, but that's about it.

I mean the loud protagonist is good for a chuckle or two. But I really could do without the incredibly bad parenting that the protagonist receives being completely ignored and treated like it's a normal way to treat a kid.
