I wish I could say this sort of thing surprises me, but it's sadly predictable. The "no intent to offend/discriminate" card gets played and the Japanese media moves on. This excuse is used for casual racism in Japan unceasingly and it's very tiresome. These are not children were talking about but adults who have no excuse not to know better.

There's a fringe group called the New Japanese People's Movement. It launched a protest against casinos in Osaka a few weeks ago because it's a Jewish plot.

Group is led by former NHK party leader Kurokawa Atsuhiko. His conspiracies about "foreign interference" made the rounds for a while, but he's considered fringe.

Japan Makes Quiet Shift on Immigration to Save Population

"Japan is increasingly turning to foreigners to fill gaps in its labor force as a
population crunch looms.

In 2022, individuals over the age of 65 made up 30 percent of Japan's
population. The country, considered a "super-aged" society, is also facing a
low fertility rate, with the number of children a Japanese woman is expected
to have in her lifetime falling to 1.2 last year.

These demographic shifts have raised concerns over the long-term viability
of the world's fourth-largest economy. Despite various policy efforts, none
has been notably successful, making immigration a necessary solution.

Earlier this month, Japan's parliament enacted updated laws to make it easier
for foreign workers to stay longer and to grant inexperienced workers three
years to develop their skills. Under certain conditions, workers can change
jobs within the same industry after one year, provided they meet professional
and language requirements.

The revisions follow efforts by Tokyo to make foreign workers in more
industries eligible for a visa that allows five years of residence in Japan and
another visa that grants permanent residency and permits family members to
live with them."

Every developed country is facing this problem.
Even the US would face population decline without immigration.

Having kids cost money and time, living cost has gone up, and some working class people in countries like South Korea and Japan have even less time for themselves.

In the past, many believed that having a nuclear family to be the only valid form of happiness.
Or that breeding is a duty and not a privilege. Not anymore.

The unfortunate side effect of this, is some people are going to blame immigrants or gay people or feminism instead of fixing the conditions.

Yeah, most developed countries are trying to attract visa workers to prop up their stagnant economy. The US and the UK are the most successful at this, I don't know about Japan's chances.

Unfortunately, the successful immigrants who become citizens tend to stop breeding as well, so this doesn't really fix demographics. Unless you go really hard, bring in quantity over quality, but then you get accused of population replacement and commit political suicide.
