So...I finally gave this a chance figuring maybe the first movie was an anomalie. And thankfully...I was right.
Spoiler for Why the movie worked:
So...I know what I said previously...but in all honesty, Venturing Sister is like Dreaming Girl never happened aside from one early throwaway line. I still don't forgive Sakuta for what happened in that first film - but yikes, he really delivered in Venturing Sister. What happens between him and Kaede is close to the best 'arc' of the title (Mai arc is always best arc). And now I have to see the Knapsack Kid film at some point.

Venturing Sister succeeded in showing how Aobuta can stand of its own accord without any of the fanciful quantum mechanics time travelling stuff. I know people like to speculate on physics, but at the end of the day, this is a story of adolescence rather than cosmology.

I had kind of written off this series since they seemed intent on continuing it as movies and the previous one had a great conclusion, but the announcement of another season rekindled my interest.
I watched Sister venturing out and Knapsack kid back to back and I'm glad I did. They were a lot more subdued and grounded than the previous movie (which I did like a lot, don't get me wrong), and focused entirely on Sakuta's family. The themes were handled really well, and the end of the second movie was highly emotional. As someone who was estranged from his mother for almost three decades and only reconnected with her recently, it resonated with me. Speaking for myself, I think that with these two movies this series finally stepped out of the Monogari series' shadow and started to become its own thing.

Randoseru Girl continues to demonstrate that all that cock-and-bull about quantum theory doesn't have a lick of relevance: this latest film continues to stand on its own merits.
