The viewers of Japanese historical drama or historical manga are not understand the court relationship. Otherwise, the story is rather confusing. The royal court or harem is more or less mirroring ancient Japan's politics. The local lords gained the power to rule Japan, by marrying their daughters to the ruling monarch. The family feuds of Japan's royal court might become civil wars. The princes or lords who lost power have to become monks or exiled far away from the court.
The world view of gold raven/crew is bit confusing. Reading Wikipedia article on mythology still doesn't answer much of the confusion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-legged_crow The characterization is easier to understand. The daughter of the eastern lord is a simpleton. It is more or less her limited contact with people outside her family. In contrast, two daughters of other houses are rather rude and ambitious. Then, the daughter of the fourth house is rather indifferent. She is there just to make up the number. Maybe they can play mahjong. |

I call BS on real Kinu causing drought and whatever other negative shit that was mentioned in this episode. It would not surprise me that Yatagarasu took on the title of Kinu after the first Kinu passed away to claim the authority of a divine being.

Okay, I'm confused about who can transform and who can't in this world. At first I thought only the elite nobility could transform, but then there was that bit about "horses" being people who have entered into indentured servitude and had their transforming power bound. So then I thought maybe everyone could transform, but that would conflict with the rule that people aren't supposed to transform in front of the women. Can't the women transform too? Or is transforming a male-only thing?

That aside, this ep was fantastic. For me this is the clear best show of the season, as good as Kuroshitsuji has been.

The relationship is quite complex. Anime storytelling is said to combine novel's first volume and the second volume. The first volume is about four hime sent to the palace, and they will be selected by the crown prince. The second volume is from a low class samurai's perspective. He is chosen by the crown prince to do all risky jobs.
Initially, the hime of east is bullied by the hime of south and hime of west, because they are eager to be chosen. The hime of north is defending the hime of east, and the hime of north is chilled. Now, the hime of north is eager to be chosen. She starts bully the hime of east. The hime of south and the hime and west become chill and defend the hime of the east. I find it suspicious that we're not informed who the Prince is visiting, every one is assuming it's Asebi's sister and that would make sense. But normally we're told where we are every time we see mansion... except for this time.
Anyway I'm adoring this anime, shame it's getting ignored by the anime community, a bit weird considering how popular Kusuriya no Hitorigoto was the last two seasons.

It is logical to think that the current empress is from the southern house. The hime of the southern house sent to the palace is actual the niece who became peasant. The crown prince visited the real daughter of the southern house in the previous episode. The niece reveals that her parents were the killer of the crown prince and Asebi's mother. She is sent by the head of the southern house(her uncle who executed her parents) to assassinate the crown prince. The crown prince received the warning and avoided the blind date with the girls. The plot of the southern house are revealed to the girls and the crown prince. The preview shows the crown prince is facing the life threatening situation.
