If you noticed, the underground subway scene kind of represents the hectic yet thrilling mind-battle between Light and L before L had a clue of who he might be, meaning the early half of the 1st arc where L didn't know who Kira is yet, but has somewhat of a clue based on the assumed evidence. That is represented by L taking slow steps towards Kira in the dark subway only illuminated by lights that represent the clues Kira left behind, while Kira merely stood still, because Light never really took it to himself to find out who L is.

Let's leave it at that till the anime shows more. As one who liked both arcs of the manga, I hate to derail into manga talk which frankly sickens me with the "2nd part sucks" talk.

If it is, then there DEFINATELY wasn't enough "screen time" for her in the manga. The "eating scene" would have more impact if she had more screen time in the anime.

Probably the latter. Both were very cleverly orchestrated, it's just the first had more intellectual "innovation" IMO (that is, in the first arc I was thinking "whoa so that's what up, sheer brilliance" while in the second arc I was thinking "awesome didn't see that coming", sans the "wow"). The second arc was way more dynamic than the first, in my opinion, which is why when I first read it, I felt like it had a lot of potential. Then when it got down into the final "section" I started to notice that it was winding down, and I guess that's when I first noticed it seemed less enjoyable than the first arc to me.

Lilith I don't think we should talk any less about manga although I suppose it's true it's good to use spoiler tags. It's good to make connections between the two. Although

the one good thing could be for people comment less on their opinion of the ending--if I hadn't read the manga already, I'm an example of someone rational enough to figure out something by analyzing the values of people who make seemingly subjective comments. Especially mentioning the possible opinions of people who are directly related to the series, like the editor.

Oh yeah and those lyrics are awesome. The ED sounds beautiful. I think it depicts a side to Light that people always either ignore or mischaracterize (that is, they usually think he's either mad or a perfect savior)--the side which is incredibly moral but which out of a desire for justice drove him to sacrifice his innocence.

Not sure how it was characterized in the anime, but in the manga, Light vomits at the thought of what he's done, and has difficulty sleeping and feels like he might definitely break from the pressure of the sin he's committing. There's no question that he sees what he is doing as murder, and as wrong, but that desire to achieve an ends from the means drives him to transform himself into Kira. When Light describes his perfect world of only "kind-hearted people who I accept", Ryuk notes that Light will be "the only bastard left", and Light doesn't disagree. Even though Light stops suffering most of the psychological effects of his immorality after a short, I think it's clear that he knows that his existence is evil--it's just that such evil is necessary for the world to know justice and be saved, so he is willing to place that existence (an existence that may be equated with the ideal of justice) as more important than any other person, just as his ideal of justice is.

Another OP metaphor I particularly liked was how Light was holding the vividly bright forbidden fruit he caught from the sky, walking on a small pathway/brick plank whatever, and when he looked down from the world from the sky, he decided to eat it. Note the vibrant vivid colour of the fruit amidst the gloomy atmosphere, a total contrast of colours.

It reflects how Light recieved a tempting forbidden power and like most humans, succumb to the temptation of power and utilized it, thus putting him on the road where he could fall down into eternal despair (( accidental murder that was both accidental and not accidental could do that to a weak mind )), return back to the past, (( he still haven't consumed the fruit and could still throw it away )) or be consumed by it's delightful power and taste and eat it (( abusing that power )), and when Light stood on top of the building (( looking down at the ugly world below him with his god complex )), he decided to take things into his own hands and consumed the forbidden fruit, eternally attached to a part of the power as he cleanses the world of evil in his own words.

The only thing that I may complaint a little is ....eh.. well, maybe only me think that way, but I do think Light is portrayed too dark, who is not so sombre and evil at that very beginning. Believe it or not, I'm a big fan of Light before L is killed by him. Overall, the tone is a little bit too dark for the set up scene.

Anyway, just to bring some of screensnaps to anybody who hasn't watched it. Enjoy.

That's true for me as well. The first 30 chapters... were probably the most amazing chapters I've read ever (might be going overboard here, but that's how I felt at the time), the manga was just so incredibly smart! Unfortunately I felt the quality drop from 30 onwards.

I have a feeling I'm going to LOVE seeing the first 10-15 or so episodes though, judging by the first.

Just poking fun. Anyways, I'm one of those people who didn't think the 2nd arc was that bad. I mean sure, Death Note started off with a huge bang and by the time vol 1 was over, I was hooked. But anything that starts off that high/great is bound to come down at some point. Theoretically it could have maintained itself at the top...but I just think that it was such an amazing concept, added with the fact that the protagonist and antagonist were both such geniuses, made people's expectations too high. So much so that most people were disappointed with the ending.

But man, I'm still waiting to get ahold of the live-action movie version of Death Note...I keep watching the trailers for that on youtube over and over and...I just can't stop, lol.

The world of the reapers? I keep thinking that they might not have wanted to include it too much because they don't want to make reapers seem goofy with their clearly dark stylization, but it'd be great to see this animated. It's never necessary to show what happens in the reaper realm, technically, so I wasn't sure if they'd include it.

I could see these 37 episodes just being the first arc, the manga itself has a slow pace. So stretching out 1.5 chapters per episodes seem possible. Although I've been waiting for the sub to see what the anime is like, so I'm not sure what kind of pace they've already set up.
