I take it you haven't played the game then? Well all I will say is that I that the zero game follows after Okabe goes back in time the first time at the penultimate episode of the original anime but then lacks the courage to go back a second time. They actually went ahead and animated that with a beta version of the episode in one recent rebroadcast.
Personally I'm extremely hyped for this. I loved the first season and the zero game was (to me, someone who doesn't particularly enjoy VNs) pretty riveting from start to finish. It gave me some major knots on my stomach to see what the bad end looks like but the payoff is oh so sweet. We also finally got to see Suzuha's mother Yuki and she was absolutely lovely. Daru is a lucky SOB

I played the VN and was afraid I was going to hate the show for not being the original and/or for diverging from the source. No such thing so far, I've been enjoying every minute of it. It's a very different feel from the original show since it deals mostly with Okabe dealing with the choice he made so it's kind of heavy but it works imho. I say pick it up. I don't know if it'll end in a way that feels satisfying but I like what I've seen so far.

It might be better to wait until the show ends. The anime has apparently made some drastic changes to the VN to the point players have no idea what they're trying to do. It could turn out well, or it could end up being a disaster.
Personally, I'm enjoying it. It's nice to see those characters again and the show has already given us a few great moments.
