They failed because Dean's alive and the law is that the first prince inherits it (as long as he's alive, it's implied). Him showing up as the first prince exposed them. I assume you meant Dean, but we don't know what he said to Yuri.

Actually I thought Dean created the whole situation by being absent for the past several years. He created the power vacuum in the first place. It's one thing to stay hidden part of the time out of fear of assassination, it's another to completely disappear. Had he occasionally shown his face, maybe things would have never gotten as bad as it did. Though he wouldn't have been able to pretend to be a normal person so he could stalk Iris by working for her.

It's mentioned that even if he abandoned the right to the throne, Elleria would still be after his life since he has royal blood. She assassinated his mother, so there's no reason she wouldn't assassinate him too given the chance. Rather, the Queen Dowager thought that the struggle over the throne would get worse if he stayed in the palace as the first prince, and that Dean might end up as a puppet since he was so young. It seems like Dean intended to make Ed his puppet instead, which makes sense given the ending of the game. He remained absent to consolidate power around Ed instead, cos people wouldn't willingly accept someone who was never there. He'd have QD use her power to make Ed king instead.

But then obviously Iris came along. :P

Decided to give it a shot and rather liked it. The lovely illustrations helped - especially Iris. For some reason the manga design for Iris doesn't look as good, though it did make some great scenes like the one where she leaves the academy

Anybody know if the illustrations for vol 3 and 4 is online yet?

The LN version of Koushaku could be rewritten to have an epic scene with Yuri - sometimes the LN versions are changed heavily from their sources.
