So I had watched it, Episode 1.
I had really *under-estimated* the amount of the ripoffs from other shows. Nearly every characters were based on some ones in previous shows. Spoiler for 1:
The episode, in general, has nothing really new - Spoiler for 2:
of the Gundam shows). What AGE just did was copying 0079; it doesn't even start well at all. I think it is fair considering the show was made for a new audience. But the audience today are not the ones 35 years ago - there are significant difference. AGE still uses the same old story, so I really doubt if many people will be sold. So far I would still respect it as a Gundam even with the ripoffs. But it makes me not accepting it as Gundam in my whole heart when Spoiler for 3:

Pardon me for calling your talk rubbish, but I have compelling reasons to do so.
-If you have a Gundam series set after so many previous Gundam series, it is bound to share some similarities. I don't understand why so many Gundam fans are either calling AGE a rip-off, or not following Gundam tradition. What do you expect the producers to do? Striking a balance is hard enough, and they have to suffer these injustice. -It also depends on how good the producers can combine past Gundam themes with newer ideas. It's only 1 episode by the way, please please please give this series some breathing space to develop a distinct identity of its own rather than sniping it off and calling it a rip-off. |

For your question with the producers, I assumed that they are paid to work. If their goal is to get new audience, who are assumed no access to Gundam 0079 before, ripoffs and brainless stuffs will be valid options. Just that it did not assume that they pretended as they didn't do so. Actually I don't think the producers doing well. As I mentioned before, we already have Zeta Gundam, Gundam Wing, Turn-A Gundam, Gundam Seed and Gundam 00, but none of them do the traditional things in that obvious manner. I think the Gundams should, at least, provide some thoughts and theories. Gundam AGE doesn't have them. Quote:
The bottom line, which you and I may seemly agree, is that the beginning is very important. A show must at least do something for people to keep on. It is complicated, but people had already done that before. Shows like C³ -CubexCursedxCurious-, Mawaru-Penguindrum, Hana Saku Iroha had already shows great drama skills. |

So, that's how they're bypassing the beamproofness of the Gafran? Not a bad idea, as we all know, giant robots are vastly improved with drills and spinning. Hopefully this trick will be back-ported onto the Genoace's beam guns as well so they're not totally useless.

I got this image from a web site:

It makes all types of toys for all ages, and aids their products with animes and comics. The anime of Little Box Fighter is pretty good. For Gundam AGE, you'll see. Note that it will make a AGE PSP game, so you don't need to go to Japan. :-) |

Rotating beams aren't exactly new to Gundam (See Mwu get hit by a Lohengrin beam that spins in SEED), or to mecha in general. It's just the effect they want to portray for the beam to make it look more 'dynamic' and hence powerful instead of just being a static beam.
