Before I reveal my unique perspective, am I right in assuming that the majority of the fans here are raging at Yukino for saying she never lies upon meeting Hachiman and then proceeding to directly lie to him by saying she never met him before when she KNEW that it was her car that hit him on the first day of high school?

How is that supposed to make Hachiman's day / life any better? It doesn't matter how you axe it, for a stranger to stranger point of view, is only common sense not to touch touchy topics that might bring an awkward atmosphere where people just feel bad. It's called manners. Furthermore, it's pretty rational to think that if someone was in a terrible accident and had to go through a recuperation period, they might not to be reminded of it over and over and over again, that also fits the manners part.

In fact, not bringing up the accident subject is probably one of the most respectful, sensitive and nicely behaved things that Yukinon has done towards Hachiman early on. Eventually we learn that "hiding it" was actually the wrong choice from Hachiman's perspective, but that doesn't mean that other choices wouldn't have ended in the worst consequence, it was a so called "between the sword and the hard place" kinda of deal.... Does that saying even exist like that in English?

If we are speaking of responsibility & whatnot, I remember a bit about Yukinon's family having already visited Hachiman's family to pay respects & apologize, and if whoever went there did not meet Hachiman, that was due to Hachiman's family's making that stand about it (it probably was Komachi thinking that it was a bother, adding that they should leave all "get well" presents under her care ).

Changing topic (tehehe☆) , the "monologue" version raws are by now kinda easy to find thanks to our friendly neighbor google search and seem to be kinda up to date. Pretty much every raw / manga site still doesn't add "monologue" to the "monologue" adaptation of this, so that might make the search a little bit more difficult.

She's claiming that she didn't lie. In Volume 1 she said she doesn't "know" him, but never said that she doesn't "recognize" him. And in Volume 6 she said she "knows" him now.

Of course, this is just her way of forcing an argument -.-

I don't even get why they're so angry at them in the first place

I find her verbal abuse in the anime rather tame and sometimes cute; I'll just accept her character as socially awkward and rather frank with her opinion.

The fact that she lied to him is still wrong, but I see no reason for all that excessive hate And it's not like people can just come up to someone and says "Hi, I'm the one who almost kill you a few weeks ago."

..speaking about that, why I do I get reminded of Mugino from Index when she met Fremea?

Small correction, but the accident actually happened in their first year. Which is over a year ago.

The people I know generally hate Yukino because she has a venomous tongue, but she doesn't necessarily get things done like Hachiman does to compensate.

Well at least she's competent and has the skill to back it up. Hachiman is just more practical and somewhat more dependable if you ask him for help IMO.

Exactly how did the sequence goes? from Hachi finding out Yukino was the one that hit him and how things turn out...
In Hachi's case you'll really lose trust to the individual that always say that she did tell lies yet she knows him bec of that incident
but in Yukino's case... its more of delicacy...
Telling him in their first official meeting that I'm in the vehicle that hit you is not a wise intro...
And how did they fix that issue between Hachi and Yukino?

I was simply confirming that everyone knew about her lie, but in any case I think letting 8man know that she was involved in his accident might have been the right thing to do although I wouldn't have her say it so bluntly like you did.

In any case, here's my take on it. If Yukino were to have made her claim about not ever telling a lie pre-8man, considering her personality, it would have been true. Yet, she deliberately, knowingly broke this achievement by giving her first lie to 8man. Yes I meant to insinuate something by that. But, honestly does anyone else see something important in that?

In a sense i can see it as a symbolic type where she is slowing breaking out of her shell of not wanting 8man to hate her instead tell a lie but not wanting to contradict with her own saying to not tell a lie. But it also kind of contradicts with the i don't want to be your friend saying too.

Durarara very specifically mentioned that it is set in Ikebukuro multiple times. Academy City is located in a portion of Tokyo similar to Ikebukuro was. They have used another city as a model for Academu City in the Anime... dont remember its name though.
