Lol I never knew of this Mary-Sue before, but I think I grasped the concept.
Well I don't think Erika is Ryukishi's Mary Sue, especially seeing how many Epic Failures she made in a single arc, but she does look like Bern's Mary-Sue. Another reason to think Bern's and Lambda's game was an very bad written story.

It's her situation and position as a 15-year-old detective, really. |

I always thought she was a parody of a metagaming character of a pen and paper RPG. But it's not like there is much of a difference, since Mary-Sues in fanfics are basically the alter ego of the author that defy laws of logic, common sense and physic just to appear cooler.

Either that, or my other thought is she had a falling-out with her friends after splitting with Bernkastel. Bern ruined Ange's life pretty handily, so who's to say she didn't do the same to her old self?

That would imply the others are still alive as well...somewhere.
Though "Erika" would have a bone to pick with Bern if she remembered being Rika. Erika is more or less Battler in the first game, but with an understanding of how things work. She is more or less the players put into the situation without the knowledge (or perhaps care) of the family events and reasonings for things. She frankly doesn't care. She just wants the mystery solved in the terms of Who and maybe How...she doesn't care about Why.

Are you sure about that? I think she's more like the Battler of episode4. Untill Episode3 Battler didn't even want to think about the idea that the culprit was one of the 18. In episode1 he defended Natsuhi from Eva, without making any other accusation. In Episode2 he defended Kanon from Rosa, without suggesting any other culprit.
Only starting from Episode3 Battler begins to accuse people without any real proof, but just because "it could have been them".

Erika is meant more or less though to parody players and Battler from EP 1-4, who don't seem to care about the culprit but rather disproving magic. I wonder how anime viewers would react to her. |
