Something I'm wondering now about the D'Hondt method as applied to the second preliminary. See this post for my interpretation of their rules.
What happens if a series is given a greater quota (more slots) than there are characters? As far as I know, nothing in the rules states what happens in this case. Do the extra slots just disappear into thin air? |

Also here's some more interesting details related to the 2nd prelims: In case of a tie between two characters of the same series, something used in political elections called the Sekihairitsu or "narrow loss ratio" will be used to break the tie. It's like this: votes received during 1st prelims divided by votes received by the last qualifier (12th place) of that group (and multiplied by 100 to make a percentage). In other words, the character who lost by the narrower margin in 1st prelims will qualify. In case of a tie between two series, both characters qualify as per the usual rule. It's also important to remark that voting for more than one character of the same series counts as only one vote for that series. Thus voting for all the characters of a series is a bit pointless (except to increase the vote totals, of course). Then some series belonging to the same franchise will participate as one series in 2nd prelims. These are: - Pretty Cure Series, Doki Doki! PreCure, Happiness Charge Precure!, PreCure All Stars New Stage 3 - Pretty Rhythm Rainbow Live, Pretty Rhythm All Star Collection - Little Busters! Refrain, Little Busters! EX - Tamako Love Story, Minami no Shima no Dera-chan |

That's too bad. There were actually enough characters to cast a ballot with 30 Saki characters on it.

If I vote for two characters from the same series then what happens to the other vote? I'm not going to vote anyway...

If a series gets enough votes for a spot in the main tournament, the character from that series with the highest number of votes will get the spot. So voting for multiple characters from the same series helps those characters over other characters from the same series.

Here are the series that have at least 4 qualifiers from the 1st preliminaries.
Newcomers: -Gochuumon wa Usagi Desuka has the most number of qualifiers which is 7 and includes all the main girls. -Sakura Trick has 6 qualifiers, who are the main girls except just one didn't make it. -Gokukoku no Brynhildr, Kiniro Mosaic, and Non Non Biyori each has 5, and includes the main girls. -Mikakunin de Shinkoukei, Nagi no Asukara, Nisekoi, No Game No Life, and Black Bullet each has 4. Veterans: -Saki has the most number of qualifiers as expected which is 40. -Love Live has 9, all are μ's members. -Madoka Magica has 5, all are the main girls. -Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai, Monogatari Series, Rozen Maiden, and Toaru Kagaku no Railgun each has 4. If you consider the number of votes each character got in the preliminaries then Saki, Love Live, and Madoka Magica are definitely the strongest veteran series. Gochuumon wa Usagi Desuka, Kiniro Mosaic, and Non Non Biyori are the stongest newcomer series. |

While we're doing statistics...
Newcomer Groups: Girls qualified from 39 different series. 15 of which only has 1 girl qualified. Veteran Groups: Girls qualified from 23 different series. 9 of which only has 1 girl qualified. The qualified Saki girls on average pull in ~30% of the total group vote. In fact, in reality, only 5 girls stands out from the pack (Teru, Saki, Ako, Koromo, Nodoka). On the flip side, MadoMagi girls are truly dominating...(Madoka and Kyoko are in low 30s, but Mami, Homuhomu, and Sayaka are getting ~40% of the votes) Of course, compare to the Big 3 in Newcomer (NNB, Kinmosa, Gochiusa), none of the veteran even came close to beating the "Big 3" (Ayaya, Karen, Alice) of Kinmosa who pull in 50%+ of the group's vote, or "Big 3" of NNB (Nyan-pasu, Koma-chan, Hotarun) who pull in ~50% each.

^The 4 Sakis are: Sasano Ichigo, Ryuumonbuchi Tooka, Kajiki Yumi and Takimi Haru.
With this Saki now has 44 characters in the main tournament (one more than in 2012). Railgun qualifies: Saten Ruiko, Index, MISAKA 10032 and Frenda Seivelun. Haibara also gets in. Madoka qualifies: Momoe Nagisa and Kyuubey Shingeki no Kyojin gets: Mikasa Ackermann and the Horses of the Survey Corps (Yes, they got more votes than Krista or Sasha) |
