After latest shooting, murder manual author calls for book to be taken
'immediately' out of print:

"It was an accessory in the arsenal of Karl Pierson, the student who opened fire
last week inside a Colorado high school, leaving one girl in a coma before taking
his own life.

“The Anarchist Cookbook,” which Pierson read before his rampage, isn’t a guide
to culinary revolution. It’s the original how-to of homicide and mass murder — and
sales are still raging, with distribution from the likes of Amazon and Barnes &
Noble, even as the work is linked to terrorist acts around the world.

Now, in rare interviews with NBC News, the publisher and the author of the
"Cookbook" are trading blows about the book’s future.

“'The Anarchist Cookbook' should go quietly and immediately out of print,” says
William Powell, who wrote the book as a stern 19-year-old, an opponent of the
Vietnam War who felt violence was justified if it could prevent even greater
violence in the process. He has since renounced that position, but never so
forcefully, telling NBC in an email that “it is no longer responsible or defensible to
keep it in print.”

Here's one answer from today's Times:

Quote:
The current antigovernment protests in Bangkok are the last gasp of Thai dynastic paternalism. They reflect the determination of the old elite and its middle-class allies to check the rising power of the formerly rural electorate by bringing down the Yingluck administration. They are calling for the creation of a “people’s assembly,” an unelected temporary governing body representing different occupational groups that would oversee a process of political reform — in effect, a dictatorship of the capital over the rest of the country.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/20/op...ternalism.html

New elections won't help these forces; they are outnumbered electorally by "urbanized villagers" and rural voters.

China gave them some material support, but North Vietnam had much closer ties to the Soviet Union than to the People's Republic of China. The Soviets had a lot more to offer in 1965 than the Chinese did, too. The Chinese provided rifles and personnel that freed up North Vietnamese units. The USSR provided "medical supplies, arms, tanks, planes, helicopters, artillery, anti-aircraft missiles and other military equipment." The Soviets manned anti-aircraft positions as well. The casualty list on the Wiki page shows 16 dead from the USSR; no Chinese deaths are listed.

In 1979, just a few years after the US left, China and Vietnam engaged in a brief inconclusive border war. The Wikipedia article suggests that the Chinese invaded to show Moscow that it could not protect its Vietnamese client.

There were no CCTVs and the suspects escaped.
Sorry if I got anything wrong. I was eating dinner just now when I heard this on TV.

^ Eh, nanonood lang yaya na'min. Nagkataon lang.

What confuses me is they said they couldn't catch them because of the heavy traffic.

If the traffic was so heavy, then how did they get away? Weird.

^ The worst part is that a NAIA official can't admit the fact that they FAILED in the security of the airport. Is it really hard to admit that? >_<. Well, the CCTV will be installed next year, like JULY was it.... DAMN...

I have to admit it was a bit tasteless for him to say that there was adequate police presence at such a time.

It sounds unnecessary and even insulting...on national TV no less.

Well, our ex-vice president did made him looked stupid already. Were there really adequate police in the area? Or it just, they weren't there when it happen.

That, unfortunately is a part of the darker side of our society, as feudal/tribal warlord mentality among local autocratic politicians -- from Ampatuan to Binay -- persists in this day and time, and is nearly impossible to eradicate from government completely despite our best efforts.

Once, China and the Soviets helped North Vietnam by supplying know-how, weaponry, and advisers. But by the late 60s to early 70s, with China under Mao completely breaking away from Soviet policy because of an ideological divide (and thus you have these border clashes and Nixon's visit), and then once Vietnam became a unified country, former American bases were turned over to the Soviet military for their use, as both Communist powers vied for regional supremacy until the collapse of the Soviet Union.

With Russia too far and having to deal with its own problems, Vietnam could only hope for help among regional allies in ASEAN, even if it's too easy to think that American bases could be preemptively attacked in an event of war over the Paracels or Spratlys; instead the Chinese military, despite its seemingly advanced hardware and massed numbers, has yet to see a major war and worse, their rival service branches have yet to cooperate as a cohesive force in joint exercises.

Anyway, history may repeat itself should China tries to assault Vietnam, and instead find itself in a quagmire of guerrilla warfare that had previously beaten the French and the Americans.

I thought Vietnames still have grunge against the Chinese in relation to mass killings if I'm not mistaking. Besides, I don't think Vietnman now is the same Vietnam as before.

You guys just have no idea how powerful the Anti-Chinese wave is growing in Vietnam. Day by day, it's getting stronger together with a nationalist sense. Plus, should I remind you that the Chinese has a hand in the bloody Land Revolution in the 1950s?

And no, the next war with China, it won't be another People War, but a Naval-Air War. Don't you guys know that we just bought 2 Kilo-Class Submarines, as well as a batch of Su30MK2V?
