I have to say, because I'm a Muv-Luv fan (in fact I just finished Alternative just last week again to prep for this anime), I think that's where most of my enjoyment stems from in this first episode.
I can't say I'd feel the same way if I wasn't a fan, it's tough for me to think like that. I don't know if this series was garnered more towards fans of the franchise, but it certainly felt like it to me. I could see how some people new to the franchise could be put off by this first episode. I agree though that these first two episodes setup the tone of the Muv-Luv series rather well, because things go from relatively peaceful to bat-s**t insane rather quickly in the game too. And on another note, I was hoping they'd use the Original Soundtrack from the game, or at least certain tracks. Kinda bummed that they didn't (yet?), but it's certainly understandable. |

Wow, that was quite an intense and exciting first episode. It really has a nice Gunbuster feel to it. It's been a while since I've last seen a serious mecha series with this type of vibe. I really want a second episode now.
It is really nice to have a mecha series where the main character isn't automatically the most awesome fighter in the history of mecha, although that could change as the story goes on. This series has hooked me from episode 1. I'm sure more of the story will be explained later on, but this first episode felt great. The art is great, the animation is great, and the flow was excellent. I did not feel like they wasted any part of the episode timewise. The only thing that I felt a little out there was the jumpsuits. They were so form fitting in an otherwise serious plot so far, and they made the girls seem nude. I really do wish that they make episodes 1 and 2 back to back in order to better flesh out the beginning. However, this is still quite a nice start.

About the suits, they are actually made to withstand knife blows and small arms fire. Doesn't do much against BETA though.
As for why they are transparent, the reason given is since out in battle there is no such thing as Male and Female quarters, they have to get used to seeing each other's body, so all trainees have transparent suits. The full pilots have colored suits. |

Haven't watched this (and probably wouldn't anyway because of the "death flags ahoy" message everywhere) but aside from the nice-looking mecha, it appears that it's going for the shock and awe factor and a death toll that would rival Another.
Tell me those students aren't gonna eaten by those BETAs without a fight. Otherwise, they're all worse than Heine Westenfluss.

2 Eps dedicated to the situation in Japan...
Well it is an enjoyable first ep, even if the TE story hasn't actually begun yet. To those complaining about the animation....it is not ultra good but relative to the standard shows these days you think it's far inferior? Seriously? Quote:

Still seemed like they painted too bright an image for everyday life even in '97 when the BETA were ravaging South East Asia right next door.
However I did enjoy a lot of the little details. Seeing Yui jump into her Gekishin and the HUD uplink being established off the headgear was great. The ships, tanks and artillery artwork was a bit of a let down especially for a first episode. Normally you see some of the best stuff in the opening episode to perk interest. I can only hope it gets better as the show rolls on. But I do have a question so someone humour me, please. When an anime airs, how many episodes would normally be ready to air? I highly doubt the series in completely done when it starts airing but I don't honestly know.

So, saw this without any prior knowledge - just the scanty details on ANN, as I do my usual season opening run-through and watch most all the shows that sound remotely good (this season, I'm also sharing my initial feedback on each show's forums out of curiosity). I know mostly pre-existing fans haunt here - but I'm not one. However, I may soon be - Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita got a potentially epic fail from me, but this one... I really liked the first ep. This is a potential epic win.
Spoiler for total eclipse:
I like the tone, I like the world setup, and the pacing was - as someone else already stated- almost perfect. If this is backstory, then great - I REALLY like when rather than refer back to the past events, stories (like the game Tales of Graces) actually play out the event, then move on to the present. I think it gives it more power. Who cares if someone is broken up over one of their old classmates death several years ago? Okay, sorry, but we don't KNOW them. But if we get to know them even briefly, like here - we see and feel the bond- suddenly, if they die and we see it, and years later she is grieving... okay, NOW I feel ya. I connect better, if it is done well. As for the Spoiler for total eclipse:

Muv-Luv.... Never heard of the series but looks interesting. Seems a bit heavy on fanservice but I'm willing to let that be overlooked since I'm just here for the Mecha action. Looks good enough that it could one day get in a SRW title from my impressions of the first episode. I mean Iczer got in before and SRW has done worse in the name of fanservice - Aqua's Pilot Suit from MX so that wouldn't be an issue.
Though it would require Getter Robo Armageddon changes since a lot of mecha animes require Japan and the rest of the world to be mostly intact... Last edited by Destined_Fate; 2012-07-02 at 09:07. |

So the first two episodes are mini arc before the main story... i hope the "main"part of TE have many of these sense of urgency and despair on it, loved the atmosphere on alternative, hoped TE is on the same league as the main trilogy.

Overall a good first episode. I don't see why people are complaining about the animation it was fine same goes for the art sure the cgi could be better but you get what you get.

I don't think it will be as urgent as the first arc since apparantly a lot of people die before the story picks up to the present.
From the loks of things I thought this was an all girl mecha show but it looks like there's a guy pilot after the skip? |

Well seen the 1st episode, as a Muv-Luv fan there where lots of things that made me reminiscence on the novels, it appears mostly great for me but it might be just cause i'm addicted to muv-luv . I don't know though what to say about the op song, i don't quite got a muv-luv feel from it. And i agree with grylsyjaeger regarding the artwork, i expected more in some cases (like the shogun's face & artillery). Still seeing Genshikin's was win XD.
PS: i like how in the beginning they keep the beta sort of in the shadows avoiding to showing them directly like in the novels XD. PS regarding suits: the reason why they are transparent its as its been said they act to kill individuality not to cause problems on the frontlines where they need to group them all together. Also the more soft part of the suit is actually made of a shock absorbing fabric that has several purposes to keep the pilot alive but in a nutshell basically its great at absorbing impacts and shock not to mention its more closer to reality then some might think:

I liked the explanation intro part.
It helped a lot with the rest of the episode. Watching Yui & her friends in everyday life was nice. It was pretty cool how those mechas have giant katanas ^^ Invasion at their doorstep...how will they handle it? Yui had some nice thoughts near the end of episode. Will be probably watching this one for the mecha & aliens part.

I connect better, if it is done well./QUOTE] I pretty much have to agree line-by-line with this one. I'm not at all familiar with the overall franchise--my knowledge of it is pretty much confined to what I've learned by reading over this thread and skimming the Wikipedia entry; basically, it was the PVs that caught my eye in advance of this season and made me want to check things out. Fanservice moments aside (hey, eroge roots are eroge roots, and they nicely limited said service to plug-suit design and the occasional camera angle thereupon), I found the sense of threat and urgency palpable; as to the "death flags" issue, sure, I expect lots if not everyone to be killed off in Ep. 2, but that's because the setting (and the fact that it's a flashback) make it damned likely, not because of some artificial scripting points. The first ep. sets the viewer up to expect grief, bitterness, and the Hell of War as recurring themes, and if the rest of the show keeps up it'll be an enjoyable (if grim) experience. If anything, I have to say that I'm not surprised by the negative comments (indeed, I am surprised by the positive ones from existing Muv-Luv fans) here--I can't recall a VN franchise adaptation that was actually liked by the existing fans of the franchise with the exception of Fate/Zero. But as an outsider coming in, at least the first episode leaves me interested in watching more and in knowing more about the franchise...which I suspect is kind of the point.

I absolutely liked the first episode. Some may be cringing on the focus over the girls. But, this single episode carried a lot more gravitas than most of those remotely similar put together. Even if the bloodshed and the fights were at a minimum in this first episode, you really had a feeling of impending danger from the smallest details.
First impressions: 17/20 Waiting to see the next episode.

Thankfully, it looks like their normal everyday life is already a relic of the past. The second half of the episode made up for the shitty first half. Not completely sold on this yet, but I'm looking forward to the next episode.

So far, the first episode left me with good impressions. Being a newcomer to Muv-Luv, I hope it gets me into the rest of the universe. Definately an anime I'll be following every week in hopes that it will get much better.
I have a feeling that it will be much darker and much bloodier. Heck, someone already crashed to her unfortunate death. I'm curious as to why the entire class of cadets is made up of females... |
