Vivio was a highly-trained tactical officer. She was a Squad Leader, in charge of a Ground Forces Defence Corps elite team! Squad 10 of the GDFC Strike Team, nicknamed the Wolves, had a reputation for being a contradiction of stealth and daring courage. Vivio had more trouble with the “stealth” part of her team’s reputation, but she definitely had the “daring courage” part in spades!

Unless, of course…she was facing these particular opponents.

Then Vivio just wanted to crawl under her favourite blanket and hide.

Vivio gulped, shifting nervously in her seat. It was a nice chair. She recognized it as one of the dining room chairs. After all, Vivio ate often at the Yagami household over the years.

But this time, she and the chair were placed not in the dining room, but in the middle of the living room. And the doors were closed and all the curtain blinds were drawn, shutting out all light save for the single lightbulb in the angled lamp that shone a bright circle down into Vivio’s face. It all seemed terribly staged.

Yet Vivio was sweating and flexing her hands in nervousness.

How had she gotten herself into this situation?

“Vivio Takamachi.” The tall figure in front of her said, stepping into the circle of light. Signum’s arms were crossed over her chest, and she was in her full Barrier Jacket. Laevantine’s hilt was in easy reach, but even without the sword in her hand Signum looked every inch the hardened warrior that Vivio knew her to be. Signum’s eyes were shadowed as she continued, “Do you know why you are here?”

“Um…” Vivio mumbled, glancing nervously around at the other figures in the room before bringing her gaze back to Signum. “I’m not sure…”

“It has recently come to our attention,” Vita scowled, the rabbit heads on her hat looking particularly menancing with their tapered eyes and stitched mouths, “that you have certain intentions towards our mistress.”

“Recently?” Vivio asked incredulously. “Really?”

“Er…recently for some of us, okay?” Vita snapped, blushing. The pint-sized girl slammed Graf Eisen’s hammer head into one palm, quickly bringing the mood from humourous back to intimidating. “Anyway! As the sworn knights of our Mistress, it is our duty to uphold the ancient rites regarding this development.”

“Ancient rites?” Vivio squeaked.

“Yes, ancient rites.” Shamal took up the narrative, idly twirling Klarer Wind around her fingers, the blue and green gems flashing in the dim light. “We are the Wolkenritter, Knights of Ancient Belka. It is our duty to uphold our Mistress’ honour by ensuring that anyone who dares to present themselves as a suitor is worthy of her attention.”

“Uh…” Vivio gulped, feeling her heart pound. “Um, I don’t think that I’m great or anything, but uh…I do think of myself as…somewhat worthy of Hayate’s attention. If she pleases.”

“A fair answer,” Signum said. “However, worth is not determined through self-assessment. We will judge whether you pass the traditional rituals…or not.”

Vivio wished that she could sink into the cushion of her chair. Unfortunately, Deep Diver was Sein’s Inherent Skill, not something that Vivio possessed. Forcibly, Vivio straighted her posture—she had to face this challenge head-on! That was the Takamachi way, and besides, Vivio loved Hayate enough to fight for her!

“I submit myself to your judgement.”

Signum looked faintly pleased at Vivio’s correct response. Vivio was very glad that Ancient Belkan history had always been one of her interests, and that Yuuno had helped her track down many old tomes about the lost civilization in her youth. Anything that might help Vivio get out of this situation intact was a blessing! Signum’s face smoothed over again into her stoic mask. “You are aware of the Ancient Belkan traditions around this issue?”

Vivio paled. “You…you mean with the swords…and the armies…and the silk dresses?”

“No, no,” Vita scoffed, shaking her head.

Vivio gave a sigh of relief.

“That ritual is for a marriage proposal,” Shamal said helpfully. Vivio’s eyes bulged, and she felt her face pale.

“M…m…m…”

Zafira appeared to take pity on Vivio, so he spoke over Vivio’s stunned stammering. “The ritual for courting is different, Vivio.”

“O…Okay…” Vivio wiped off the cold sweat that had broken out over her forehead. Whew! Marriage? She wasn’t even sixteen yet! It probably wasn’t even legal! Wait…a ritual for courting? Vivio had never read about this before… “What, um, exactly do I have to do?”

“Are you willing to undergo the Trial of Courtship for our mistress, Hayate Yagami?” Signum demanded instead, her tone dropped into her cold, husky knight’s growl. Suddenly, Vivio felt the room temperature drop considerably. And it couldn’t have been though any magical means, since Signum’s magic was fire-based. No, it could only have been the sudden alertness and keen glint in the Wolkenritter’s eyes as they closed in on Vivio with a predatory air.

But this was for Hayate! And for their relationship!

“For Hayate?” Vivio gulped, and sat up straight, trying to pull together her courage. “Yes, I’m willing.”

“Very well,” intoned Signum, taking a step towards Vivio. In silent unison, Shamal, Vita and Zafira moved in closer as well, surrounding Vivio’s chair. She stared up at them, her hands clinging to her seat. Vivio consciously loosened her grip, returning her hands to her lap and swallowed. She didn’t have to be so nervous, and besides, she was willing to fight for Hayate! Even so…when had Shamal and Vita seemed so tall and intimidating? She expected that from Signum and Zafira, but…right now Vivio was duly reminded that all the Wolkenritter were considered legendary knights of Ancient Belka.

“Your first trial,” Shamal said lowly, her sweet smile bringing shivers to Vivio’s spine, “requires you to conduct yourself with absolute honesty and sincerity. Do you understand?”

“Yes, I understand.” Vivio braced herself for what may come…

“In Ancient Belka, we used to call this Untersuchung.” Vita crossed her arms, smirking. “I believe you modern kids would call it…20 Questions?”

The only appropriate answer Vivio could give was a low whimper.

It's funny, this was supposed to just be a crack short, but it ended up having a little bit more importance to the overall series than I had anticipated!

Fight for someone's heart is a bit more difficult because the Wolks are Hayate's family, Vivio can't simply go Sankt Kaiser on them and deliver massive curbstomp. She must fight to gain their thrust in order to pursue her relationship with Hayate. Zafira is still a good babysitter xD.

Yes, crack helps ease the strain of the long stories! ^__^ (*coughcough* Alcohol does the same thing?? ) Hehe, I tried to be as vague as possible so that I didn't write us into a corner for that marriage proposal scene , but I needed that line to be funny, so....armies??

I'm usually not one for Vivio x Hayate, but I found this to be rather cute and hilarious. I also now have all kinds of imagery in my head as to what exactly goes on in a Belkan marriage proposal, one of which is Vivio proposing at swordpoint and another is reminiscent of American Gladiators.

Also, don't worry about killing brain cells. We have your brain scanned and backed up for just such an occasion.

Let's see. For questions where you want specific, factual answers, there's the Q&A thread. That's for "Are there any references in canon to where Raising Heart came from?" type of questions (the answer is no, by the way...people have, in fact, asked that one repeatedly. ).

The "Magic and Technology of MGLN" thread is for general discussion on how different systems work. For some reason, it always seemed to degenerate into flame-wars, though, really more than any other thread (except the Legion/300 war that got the first fanfiction thread closed...yes, these 1703 pages are actually the second iteration of it!).

The "Theories and Speculation" thread is just what it sounds like.

And lots of discussion, as you'll note, tends to get dropped into this thread, because as soon as it happens in a particular fic, then things get discussed in that context.

Lastly, do not overlook the Sound Stage Translations thread--not because there's any discussion there, because there basically isn't, but it's a hugely valuable resource--every one of the MGLN sound stage Drama CDs have been translated by Nagumo there, so it makes for a great reference for looking stuff up.

I'm glad this forum has the option to Keyword Search within threads. It's already helped immensely for looking up information specifically about Yuuno in the Battle of the Aces and Manga Discussion threads.

Lastly, do not overlook the Sound Stage Translations thread

I was largely unable to access the internet last week and didn't have my computer -- which is a good reason why there's no Hayate/Vita/Signum chapters already written and being posted -- but I used what opportunities I had to read that thread.

Thus did I learn that, even though Yuuno was "always alone" growing up, he has pleasant memories of the Scrya Clan's "family tent". Enough so that he enjoys lively parties and busy social gatherings.

It adds a little depth to a character when he's just as comfortable in the Infinite Library and an alcoholically boisterous flower-viewing.


Research suggests, however, that Yuuno was preparing a Teleportation High spell while fighting off Vita and trying to crack her field. So, I think I'm remiss about that part in Chrono's chapter which claimed Chrono was better at multi-tasking spells. (Besides, Chrono was just sneaking around at that point, rather than dueling Vita.)

“O…Okay…” Vivio wiped off the cold sweat that had broken out over her forehead. Whew! Marriage? She wasn’t even sixteen yet! It probably wasn’t even legal! Wait…a ritual for courting? Vivio had never read about this before… “What, um, exactly do I have to do?”

“Are you willing to undergo the Trial of Courtship for our mistress, Hayate Yagami?” Signum demanded instead, her tone dropped into her cold, husky knight’s growl. Suddenly, Vivio felt the room temperature drop considerably. And it couldn’t have been though any magical means, since Signum’s magic was fire-based. No, it could only have been the sudden alertness and keen glint in the Wolkenritter’s eyes as they closed in on Vivio with a predatory air.

But this was for Hayate! And for their relationship!

“For Hayate?” Vivio gulped, and sat up straight, trying to pull together her courage. “Yes, I’m willing.”

“Very well,” intoned Signum, taking a step towards Vivio. In silent unison, Shamal, Vita and Zafira moved in closer as well, surrounding Vivio’s chair. She stared up at them, her hands clinging to her seat. Vivio consciously loosened her grip, returning her hands to her lap and swallowed. She didn’t have to be so nervous, and besides, she was willing to fight for Hayate! Even so…when had Shamal and Vita seemed so tall and intimidating? She expected that from Signum and Zafira, but…right now Vivio was duly reminded that all the Wolkenritter were considered legendary knights of Ancient Belka.

“Your first trial,” Shamal said lowly, her sweet smile bringing shivers to Vivio’s spine, “requires you to conduct yourself with absolute honesty and sincerity. Do you understand?”

“Yes, I understand.” Vivio braced herself for what may come…

“In Ancient Belka, we used to call this Untersuchung.” Vita crossed her arms, smirking. “I believe you modern kids would call it…20 Questions?”

The only appropriate answer Vivio could give was a low whimper.

Oh, howdy there!

Anyway, I decided that I can't accurately cover Yuuno's method of handling the Maze until I've worked through how he fights on his own.*

Chrono has fought alone against Precia's defense robots and dueled Fate in practice, and I was able to use that. Whereas Yuuno's only solos and duels happened mostly off-screen. Plus, Yuuno's style is more team-based on top of that.

So, I decided that I need to write what happened off-screen for those fights.

Yuuno versus the First Jewel Seed, versus the Second Jewel Seed's monster (from start to well-known finish), versus Chrono in a training match, and versus Fate in a training match. Then Vita.


* Why doesn't Yuuno just teleport to the end? Well, that would still require some fighting and self-defense, if it was happening on a planet. But I decided that it's probably happening on the HQ subspace station. And teleporting from point to point within subspace seems like something I could reasonably label "impossible".
