Google Translate *kicks it* tells me that (according to her) the novel eventually ends with Alto/Sheryl. That and that the novel feels to target one fanbase: Alto.
Oh and also, the Brera/Ranka fans were further rubbed with salt. XD

It's funny because one of the major complains of the other reviewers is Alto's "queer" characterization.
I didn't really see a mention of "Alto/Ranka" ending, but a spotted mentions of the massive slash-subtext with Brera or Michel. I'm going to wait for a more credible review.

I don't see any "shippy" bits mentioned from either triangle girl (besides the known triangle resolution?). Mostly the whole Alto and Brera or Alto and Michel. So I'm going to wait until I get a review from someone from this forum before investing in this stuff.

I don't know, magnus... I've seen more Alto/Michel pic promotions (what's up with Alto blushing at Michel in most of them?) officially released than Alto/Ranka (that aren't in a triangular with Sheryl I mean).
There must be a profitable market.

To be quite honest, his beauty makes me mistake him for a woman when I see certain fanart, as most of the Alto fans view him as a female or playing a female role. Gender bender art is becoming more popular... To me, if Alto ends up with a girl, it'd be Ranka because she's already cute and can easily be seen as a woman. Whilst Sheryl can easily dress up as a boy (shown well in the movie) and act like one; making me not take her interest in Alto seriously in the movie. So, I'll just throw that out there. As for the novel: the main conflict doesn't end? The war? I thought that was the POINT of Macross! So, whom wins the triangle in the novel? I know you say it leads to AxS, Thess; but I want to know Yot-chan's full read of the novel. But you don't have to if you don't want to, Yot-chan; I'll just wait till I have money to move to Japan and study all forms of Japanese, which might take 5-10 years at my job rate. All joking aside: is there anything specific about Ranka that the novel glorifies (I will intensify on that) her from the series/movie version of herself? What about Sheryl? Or even Brera? (Leaves out Alto, not important when already discussed.)

The Michael/Alto pictures that scarred me on Pixiv as well as those Doujins on Aarin agree with you. @Lovemekags Sheryl only dressed up as a boy for a stage performance. But you could just as easily say that that makes her all the better for Alto because if he ever feels like cross dressing he can do so with a partner this time. I haven't seen any of the reviewers mention Ranka just Brera. |

Alto's a bit like Klan, IMO. Michel's a bit like Sheryl. Personality speaking. Of course, they have their differences, but they have strong similitudes as well. @LoveMeKags: I don't have this novel! But from what's being said (review wise), it's not departing that much from the movies? But it lacks, what is called "emotional impact" and good cohesive writing?

Now I can't say much on the series novels, as I've only read part of them that people have translated. But I will say they were written slightly better and show Alto in a more "released" environment (we're talking about his character, not the "world" he lives in). His emotions are easier to understand and the growth of his feelings is more "realized." In the series, they left out these peak moments, and so I actually enjoyed the light novel a bit more. As for the movie novel, I'm not sure how to react, honestly. From what I've heard, Alto is perceived as an emo (which is SO not his character unless he's dying or learns that someone he loves is dying, honestly). He completely jumps off the track of the triangle and heads straight into the end of the novel, which is not a "released" environment like the series novels; no, it is a more "stressed" and "isolated" environment where the author once again took hold of Alto and MADE him choose a girl based on where THEY'D grown him. And to be honest, I did not like the reviews of the end. As for mentions of characters: aw... Ranka isn't mentioned? Just Brera? Well, I hope he got as big a role in the novel as in the movie. I like him as a character, separate from Ranka. But it's sad that people seem to forget Ranka even exists now... I knew that would happen if she lost the triangle too. Because most Macross characters who do are forgotten over time (with the exception of the legendary Minmei of course)

Spoiler for what I ship after reading movie spoilers:
Edit: eh, Ranka is mentioned in the reviews. But it doesn't say a lot about her or her role (for the record, Sheryl's not mentioned a lot either, bit more than Ranka)? Alto was, though. Then again, this could be because they didn't want to spoil anything? The Ranka&Brera interaction was axed a bit, according to that blogger. These are the reviews. Got nothing to do with the novel or a good summary! They are just reactionary impressions of dissatisfied fans.

Maybe the author, not knowing the ending just yet, thought that Kawamori would troll us with Bi!Alto ending with Michael or Brera, and therefore played up that angle. Though now I want art of Legend of Galactic Heroes!Sheryl/Gothic Lolita!Alto, preferably with Sheryl down on one knee and proposing with an earring. I can't wait for the summaries, cause it seems to promise popcorn worthy lulz. |

Well, I'd first prefer an accurate summary, but so far we have had basically a new continuity for every Macross Frontier tie-in product, so why not for this one as well?
Oh, and again with the question to Dash_Hunter: Is the "no more Macross Frontier material after this point" thing confirmed? Because this scenario seems to have spontaneously spawned into existance, with no prior information.

Another blog post on the light novel. Might find something useful or interesting here, if anyone wants to give it a try.
