It does seem to be working. Ichika isn't heads over heels over any girl.

He may not be head over heals for any girl. But he has 7 girls who are head over heals for him. Which is a problem if being dense was meant to keep the girls away. As an enemy has 7 targets s/he can go after to hurt Ichika. Granted they aren't easy targets, but they are a means of getting at Ichika.

I seems to recall Ichika stated in a monologue that he didn't want a girlfriend yet until he sorted out his messed up high school life, can anyone quote on the source? Or I'm wrong on this?

If it's true, then him being dense is there to prevent him from breaking anyone's heart, not even when he's broken physically

Actually he doesn't want girlfriend because he's still dependent on Chifuyu. He wants to provide for his own before getting a girl.

Not wanting a girlfriend doesn't equal being so dense as to not understand or recognize that a girl likes him. As you can not want a boy/girlfriend yet recognize that someone of the opposite sex likes you in a potentially romantic manner.

At this rate Ichika has essentially friendzoned the girls because he either can't or wont recognize they like him that way.

Personally I'm thinking this will end with a harem ending. There just isn't enough chemistry between Ichika and any given girl to say she has an advantage.

Not unless volume 8 begins pushing one girl above the others.

I actually prefer the IchikaXHouki... Ichika realizing he likes her +kinda luke shiro in FSN did), telling her as if i was small talk, she getting angry for the surprise and rhe attitude (and mostly becayse how mych and for long she suffered while to him it was a piece of cake), he kisses her to shut her up, and that's it... Of course, she tells him he won't get any until marriage, whichhe paifully accepts... And weeks~montha later, she attacks him with a boooty call, arguing that he should have attacked much earlier, because as a maiden she had to protect her purity, even if she wanted to be with Ichika. Of corse, this last part win't ever make it to the printing machines

I like it. I have some suspicions concerning Ichika's denseness though.

Spoiler for Ichika's denseness:

Ichika was created by Phantom Task possibly using Chifuyu's eggs. This was done as a means of trying to replicate Chifuyu's genius that they could use for themselves. Chifuyu found out and took Ichika from them. This would explain why there are no parents in the picture. Chifuyu would technically be the parent and would explain why Ichika could use the IS since they were built around Chifuyu's specs. I suspect that Chifuyu's parent are higher ups of the organization and that was how they managed to do that.

Perhaps they had done hypnosis on Ichika at an early age maybe as a means to keep him under control and possibly for breeding in the future with people of their choice which is why he has trouble noticing the interest of others. He wasn't meant to.

Madoka was another attempt at recreating Chifuyu's skills but was done through cloning rather than the way Ichika was created which turned out to be less effective.
