I myself usually wait 3-4 episodes before deciding if it's worth continuing (but some are just so bad, that I didn't even finish episode1). At the other end of the spectrum are shows like Madoka which was so-so for me on ep 1, yet I was blown away ep3 and above. Still There is A) value in evaluating an episode on it's own ( a lot of posts above mentions their evaluation of this as an episode , not as the whole show) otherwise we won't have much to talk about here in Animesuki B) value in evaluating this episode in terms of the whole especially since this IS ep1 , the opening. As they say first impressions last. and Ep1 sets the tone for the whole show & also where the premiss is put in. so yeah I don't really see any problem if anyone didn't like what they saw, that's up to them. I on the other hand am intrigued enough to keep watching for the near future. === oh hey, Origami is my early favorite

Just watched the atrocious streaming cram because I was simply too curious... just to be reminded that yes, streaming really looks as atrocious as I recall from quite a while ago @_@
I'll stay with TV-only from now on to prevent more eye cancer. Anyway, besides that, I found the first episode highly enjoyable Kotori sets a new hallmark in big brother abuse, and there's a good amount of other over-the-top stuff too (like Kotori tuning out to be a space ship captain), which I found pretty amusing as well XD Besides that, Kotori really *delivers* with her overknee socks and her shimapan Another girl that delivers is Origami First appearing to be a shy, quite girl, she turns out to be the captain of a Strike Witches-like unit - just that she has an even better combat uniform Tohka didn't make too much of an impression on me - nice purple armour, but that skirt is *way* too long, and she's too arrogant and bitchy so far. I'm sure that will change however, once the dating stuff starts I'm curious where this is headed. It's good over-the-top humour with some nice sci-fi elements, with some funny galge parts, too Just as I thought it might be, this could very well turn out to be one of the best series in spring

Emphasis on the word "yet". I can see some interesting plot development with the set up and might keep on watching if they go through with the joke/twist/whateveryouwanttocallit. My issue is that if look at the writing and the usage of music the first episode is very poor in terms of presentation.

It's kind of naïve for anybody to expect action and fight scenes as soon as the show is jumping into the plot. There needs to be set-up and for a pilot episode I believe the set-up was done fairly decently compared to most rushed jobs we tend to see these days. Expectations can do a lot to destroy what you actually like about the show.
From what we are treated to (Origami and Tohka's brief fight scene) I am very sure the action will come - it is only a matter of when, and how well they are executed. |

I agree. You'll notice I mentioned earlier about my hopes that they have the budget stretched evenly across the episodes, I like the action in that it's not over the top, but at the same time I don't want to see it degrade to them using episode 01's fight choreography again.

So I finally decided to look into this. The ED is called "Save the World". Now this episode 01 thing, it's clearly lacking vocals, so if you look past it and try to understand what was being said, they've actually cleared up a chunk of the story details in that ED sequence. I would rather episode 02 start right off the bat from this ED that them spend screen time saying the exact same words said in that ED. Quote:
-First off, the space quake sequence. Nice apocolyptic stuff with narration, I should note by none other than the protag. -Kotori's wake up dance, I loved it. I can't see her shaking her butt to anything other than that samba di amigo At least it wasn't Eurobeat or Heavy metal stuff -The breakfast scene. This piano piece was fitting to continue his narration, similar to what I would equate to slice of life, especially with the high activity ruckus of the scene before it. -One the way to school. This is what we'd call "Days of ____", where blank is insert-world-here. Usually in games from Japan, this is what I would call the music that plays during peaceful times. For example, JRPG's. -The above music changed into what you would call the theme of that best friend guy. Music fitting of Mr know-it-all who doesn't during this scene he's letting us know of details we'll need to keep in mind later on. I thought this was okay, again, even though I'm Eurobeat infected, there's no room for that here -Here's something some may not pay attention to. The orchestral score that plays during the evacuation sequences. This is akin to a sequence of preparation, for example in SRPG's, there's usually a kind of music that plays with tension building up, in preparation of the upcoming event, in this case we see the spacey quakey not long afterwards. -So Tohka's appearance, I loved it. What else would you like playing in the background as you meet a powerful goddess for the first time? Yes, I've played quite a number of JRPG's, and this is the kind of music I like when a goddess falls from the heavens -Here's one I like to point out. The music that plays during Tohka's fight with the Busou Shinki Strike Witches, It was great because of something I've already mention twice: Shiddy's narration. During this scene, he's got questions, they don't have answers, because this is all happening from his point of view, he can't make heads or tails of what's going on, and when it ends, it's his apocolyptic event, similar to how the very first sequence in episode 01, his scene abruptly ends in a flash. -This next sequence was mentioned earlier, the music that plays during the Commander Kotori sequence. It fit nicely due to several of my opinions: rememebr what I said about Shiddy having questions and not getting answers? Reine ain't got time for you, so leave it up to Kotori. Now, I've mentioned a few times already on this forum about the typical stereotyping of twintails, and that they are usually portrayed as childish and flat ACK *Kotori shoves a lollipop up mangatron's....*. So you've got a loli commander, an unbelievable situation, his little sister, the butt shaking waker of oniichan's, where she's in a ship leading a crew on a mission. This is the kind of music I'd want playing to play up that situation, music usually played during explanation sequences. One's main concentration is supposed to be situated in the explanation going on, and given the military feel of the situation, a marching song fit well enough for me -Lastly, Reine's school invasion music is very simialr to anime where a character just unbelievably transferred in, meant to portray a happy go lucky sequence of something meant to be good, but troublesome to the protag. As you can see, I'm fine with what I heard other than one glaring facT: much of it's dampening feel is due to the monotastic quality of the sound, I tell you anime and gaming must not be enjoyed on Mono, and this streaming pile of trite ruined it. Other than that, I want to wait for the official broadcast to start before I go all audiophile on the BGM's, but from what I heard, I liked it, and while this series won't win best sound editing like Blackhawk Down, I'm at least happy they are keeping with the traditions of events and not trying to win Billboard's top 100 list |

And we still have to watch the episode on 720p, not on lower-than-budget-class 200+p.
Maiko Iuchi made a nice soundtrack in Toaru Majutsu no Index, but listening to it on such low bitrates is not doing him justice.

1. using a monitor of lower resolution (i.e. less pixels) (better yet, watch it on old CRT TVs through composite video ) 2. having your screen resolution match your monitor's actual resolution (no additional scaling by your panel) 3. Do not zoom / maximize your player (no scaling by the renderer) 4. Turn on the deblocking filters if your player has any. (this step should actually net you the most obvious improvement in block reduction unless your player's deblocking filters suck). If you are using VLC, go to video->post-processing. Can't remember right now, but I think I used level 4, since there was a much more noticeable drop in sharpness when I used level 6. Yeah, it might sound kind of dumb to do all these stuff just to slightly improve the quality, but well...... |

What the HECK is up with Kotori!? I have no problem with tsundere, even if the dere is almost impossible to find and the tsun goes all the way to outright sadism. But I don't like such a massive change in character, large enough to make it seem like the little sister he's known is a fantasy she created to deal with him. I'd want a ton of explanation, this goes FAR beyond Iori in terms of character change and doesn't come close in terms of recognizable cause. Not to mention her attitude makes me want to see Shidou throw her over his knee and spank her.
I enjoyed this very much, but I hope some more context is given, and some evidence is given that his brat sister has at least some feelings other than contempt for him. I get enough of that these days, often with the same voice. |

^ There will eventually be context to her actions. I think there's more to Shidou than we seem because of how Kotori acted as his wildest fantasies (getting a younger sister) despite not actually caring about him much. He may be hiding something up on his sleeve.

Animation looks great though and I'll give it a few more episodes, some times it takes a few more for me to get into the thing.
