He thinks it was his fault that Father was eaten. When he learns the truth and that his family too is in danger he should go back to tanuki form

Haven't felt this amount of hatred since last time Daisuke Namikawa voiced an atypical character for him

well , as much as i hate my own older brother i get really along with him and i have never even thought of hurting him . The only time where i hurt him was when when i was around 4 years old because he wouldn't let me and my friend use the playstation (it was my birthday so i got really angry) so i took my chinese softair gun (the ones you buy for few euros) and shot him in the back
Since then more than 15 years passed without having a fight. So as little brother it kinda made me rage that he killed his own older brother just like that.

I think the scenario might well start out with that, but we keep getting mis-led on things or only part of the story. It seems trickery, scheming and bad blood can take a long time to surface. and a long time to carry out. Soun's not even satisfied that he got Souichirou, so he's taken his time and is now going after the rest of the family. Well, in MY world, I'd have Souichirou aniticpating the same scenario, and knowing that his family would be next, faked his death with Benton's help, and HE is waiting for the time when Sou would make his move, then will nip it in the bud, helping Yashirou. Benten could be crying at the well now because she has to let all this happen without helping the family. In my world, anyway...

At one point I considered Souichirou was faking his death too and was just transformed and hidden somewhere.

However, I think the scene with Akadama in episode 8 confirms he is dead. I am pretty sure that was Akadama conversing with Souichirou's spirit.

I also think it might ruin some of the impact of the story if it was discovered that Souichirou was still alive.

Daisuke Namikawa is a great seiyuu but he is not in Eccentric Family.

Benten continues to be a mystery. With every line she speaks, I can't help but wonder what's going through that head of hers.

Benten is so capricious, probably the only reason she even saved Yasaburo is because he's an interesting toy to play with. Other than that, tanukis getting eaten means nothing to her. Hell, she admitted it too!

I see Benten as a force of Nature, neither good nor evil, just Benten. She lives outside the spiritual world the tanukis inhabit, she is not truly a tengu despite her ability to fly and she is no longer really human after her abduction as a teenager so she doesn't fit in anywhere. She is a catalyst, causing things to happen but not affected by them to any extent and I think that makes her melancholic as she can't connect with anyone or anything, not even the Friday Fellows.

I may just be thinking too hard on this but I can't help but wonder: Why don't they just transform into something small enough to escape from the cage?

^ From what mamma said, it sounds like when a tanuki is caught in a cage they are inexplicably unable to escape. I didn't bother thinking logically when she said that, lol.

I knew Benten would save Yasaburo for one reason or another. It seems like she did it on a whim and won't help him again. I say "seems" because it's impossible to tell what this woman thinks. 11 episodes in and I still have little to no clue what her motivations are.

I didn't expect Yasaburo to fall into a trap right after he escaped... I thought it was suspicious that he was able to find the professor so easily (he pretty much popped up right in front of him), but I didn't think it was a trap laid out by those two idiots. I guess they're not that dumb. With Yasaburo captured as well, the family's last hope is Yashiro but there is only so much such a young tanuki can do alone. Hopefully he won't rush blindly and will ask Yajiro and Akadama for help.

Kinkaku explained they need inner calm in order to transform, and apparently being in a cage robs them of that.

I wondered the same thing myself.

The older Ebu brother said that a tanuki can't transform without inner peace & calm or something like that. We've seen evidence of this throughout the series. Yashino's tail pops out whenever he's nervous. Mama can't transform when it thunders. Papa was intimidated by Benten and couldn't transform in her presence. I guess being locked in a cage is probably disturbing to tanuki as a species.

I dunno about that. They said it took them a year to come up with the plan. That's an awfully long time to plan a fairly simple trap.

Beat me to it.

How can Benten look that bored when she has inadvertently discovered that the orientation of a transformed tanuki stays the same even when they undo their transformation.

This proves that certain parts of a tanuki in a traformed state correspond to their real bodies.

Well, either that or Yasaburu was just being a goof.
