I can't help but share the same negative sentiment here: the premise of the whole episode was certainly more or less what we usually have, but the way how it was presented was definitely over the top.
Keiichi being lecherous isn't anything new (hey, we did get that shameless speech in S2 with Kameda), but it is was generally just for the kicks and nothing really that much. Generally speaking, Rena's punishment game was alright, but Rika's and the sonozaki twins' were really not fitting the franchise (while I've seen much worse with comedies such like Sora no Otoshimono, doesn't mean it would fit here). I think the "type" of fanservice used in the first rei OVA (pool) was actually the kind that would work best here. At least, the syndrome portion was much more bearable overall. But in a broad sense, the comedy here lacked a lot of personality and was basically a huge dose of flat nonsense, coated with an overbearing fanservice. Leaving the service aside, if it was more akin to Rei's content, it would be ignored a bit, but frankly, it didn't exactly feel like a school activity blast, but a very uninspired crack. Overall, I can't say I was impressed by it, story wise, but more importantly, production wise. Although it is miles away from Umineko whacky and dull design/color pattern, Kira 1 was really rough in the traits (especially the hair) and arguably lack a smooth design than what was used for Kai (at least, it wasn't as shiny and awkward as Rei). OST was also a letdown, but that's nothing new with the anime series I guess. At least, it seems Kira 2 might be more entertaining....hopefully.

All this time waiting, and this is what we got ? Son, I am disappoint.
The fact this wasn't going to be a serious episode became quite apparent early on, and I can live with that, but the actual contents of the episode were disappointing, to say the least. The jokes simply seemed to lack any punch potential, and were completely overshadowed by the blatant amounts of fanservice that was clearly the raison d'ętre of this OVA. Sadly even this part felt lacking in innovation, and simply came across as the laziest possible way to do fanservice with minimal effort. I am quite fine with fanservice presented in amusing fashion (Sora no Otoshimono), and previous episodes of Higurashi have demonstrated the capacity as well, like the whole pool incident which was a lot of fun to watch. This thing simply lacked any spark though, and the whole deal with the guys sitting in a circle and unleashing a slideshow of service featuring the female cast of Higurashi was borderline boring. That, or making me facepalm. Pick your poison I guess. There was hardly anything "Higurashi" about this episode, and I can't say I had fun watching it - because I didn't. I never thought that anything Higurashi would make me feel like wasted time, but Kira 01 certainly managed just that. OP was lazy as well, to say the least. Yeah ... lazy excuse for fanservice sums this up pretty nicely. Character designs were not exactly the best Higu has to offer either. Definitely a big disappointment after all this time.

Barring the first minute (and possibly another minute right after the break) this was probably hands-down the worst piece of filler I've ever seen. There's no humor, there's no atmosphere, there exists nothing but void. Utterly lewd and boring pure garbage. I kept watching this car crash in slow motion, hoping for some hint of the artful canvas behind the thick layer of feces. Alas, it was too thick for me to see through. This isn't the Higurashi we know and love, it's an obvious knockoff that somehow has an official stamp on it. For being Soul Brothers, not one of them had soul.
My theory is that the episode is a rejected concept from some cancelled series where they just reworked the scripts into something vaguely resembling Batsukoishi-hen and called it a day.

Anyways I guess If you went into watching the episode not to take it seriously like I did, it was much more enjoyable and funny. Would definitely not call it "bad", unless if you don't have a perverted sense of humor. This episode reminded me of SnO for some reason. I agree some parts were a little over the top but nothing terrible. |

The problem is that even if you do not take it seriously, it isn't as effective as previously done.
I never took the pool OVA seriously, yet it cracked me up. Likewise, the whole elogy about man's perversion with Keiichi and Kameda was successful. But in this OVA, it had no personality nor presentation that deem to be interesting or funny IMHO: it is quite obvious the type of humor was radically changed here, and we got much more T&A stuff than any other higurashi anime stuff we had previously. Heck, I don't think I have an issue with "perverted humor", since I enjoyed Sora no Otoshimono and B Gata H kei, but Kira 1 was definitely not done properly. It sort of reminds me the fanservice style of R-15 in fact.

The scene with Keiichi chasing Hanyuu was cute, I liked Keiichi's "WTF?" reaction to Satoshi showing up from out of nowhere, and there's a couple of random scenes here and there I liked (The scene around 17:40 where Keiichi first 'woke up' to find himself surrounded by the rest of the Game Club actually felt like normal Higurashi, and I also enjoyed the part where Rena, Mion, Satoko, and Rika attacked Keiichi and Takano to stop the True Hinamizawa Syndrome from spreading). Other than that... yeah, kind of trashy and embarrassing to watch. On the bright side, the next episode of Kira looks like it will be much better. |

Rei 1 and 5 were pointless ecchi stuffs, but it had at least some kind of narrative making it humorous. This was BORING. Nobody wants to spend that much time hearing about Keiichi's sex fantasies. Boring fanservice = fail. This could have been a string of DVD extras, with the lack of rhyme or rhythm. But for some reason they made it into a OVA episode. Anyhow, thank you DEEN for ruining something else again. You guys are experts and unparalleled.

I was hoping for this OVA to get me back into Higurashi after the longest time, guess I'll just echo what's already been said and say this first episode didn't feel like Higurashi at all to me. Mostly just boring perverted pandering and uninspired unfunny humor.
I'll admit it's nice seeing the characters again in something new though. Some of the most significant figures for me during my time as an anime fan. Preview for episode 2 makes it look to me like it could go both ways, be either really cool and entertaining or a total waste of time. It doesn't look very "Higurashi"-like to me either, more like some spoof of Madoka Magica, but I'll judge it as it comes. I'm hoping there's at least one of the planned 4 episodes that re-captures the essence of Higurashi. If there's at least one then this OVA series will be worth it.

The opening doesn't exactly make things any better either, it's god awful. Same with the ending. That was probably the biggest let down for me. And it's not just the garbage song they use, but the animation looks like something they made in Flash. But seriously, it doesn't feel the same without Eiko Shimamiya.

Ah yes, Kira 01. So, DEEN was being DEEN, which I don't have to like. The first half did drag, like a carcass along a gravel road. Even I felt like taking a cold shower after that. That said, I should gather my thoughts about certain parts of this OVA.
Spoiler for Part 1 Musings and Commentary:
Then came Part 2, and things got weird...interesting, but decidedly weird. Spoiler for Part 2 Musings and Commentary:
Eh, the episode gets a 5. Part 2 is more interesting, but Part 1 is still beyond obnoxious. VN side stories are called that for a reason. On the plus side, I've got more footage for Higu Hells and AMV's.

I was disappointed by this episode.
I was waiting the entire episode for someone to get a cleaver in the head or arm cut off or something. Also Rena didn't take anyone home-_- Rena and mion/shion delusions were pretty nice though

I'll admit that I do spend a lot of time analyzing Irie's character and personality, and uh... okay, yes I am a little obsessed, but I was sincerely surprised when he came up with the idea for Mion and Takano's penalty games - especially when he started the groping motions with his hands-- I nearly had a heart attack. Also, copy pasted from the general [/late] Spoiler for Copy Pasta Review:
