Episode 1
Good episode overall, definitely got the military and adventure feel of the show and the OP song reminds me a bit of GATE. Furthermore, Ikta seems like component guy with a clever personality. Not sure what I think about the character designs still. I'm not too impressed by them but they're not bad either. I think it could work out in the long run. Seems like the episode ends on a cliffhanger so I'm excited for more. The military themes really are a nice touch to the show imo.

Episode 1 left me with a mixed feeling about it.
On one hand the characters are pretty likeable, Ikta is a nice guy and also competent which is a nice thing I must say. The OP was terrible literally didn't fit at all in this series and obviously those awful designs with the samefaces and laziness from the studio really affects the series, you can't even see emotions, is almost like everyone is doing the exact same thing even when the characters is trying to show a completely different thing. Overall it wasn't the best start but it wasn't bad either, I definelly will follow this because it reminds me series with strong political and military topics. |

First episode already reminded me one of the reasons why I like this series so much and the need to go back to finish reading volume 9 and today's released 10 - ie. the depiction of believable realism (tactics and strategies) in battles and warfare just from the comments made by Ikta and Yatori during the chess match. The author puts a lot of thought into writing his battles, and it's definitely one of the major charm points of the series other than the relationships between the characters.
The episode started with a casual feel but the tension escalated fast and I think it ended at a good place. |

That was pretty good. I like that they trimmed some of the fat from the original material and made it more streamlined. I found I got easily bored while reading the manga.
There was a lot of exposition, but hopefully we get less and more natural as the series continues. The character design grew on me as the episode went on.

They actually skipped some stuff and made some changes to connect some scenes. I would say it's not a problem really. Especially knowing that some of the later volumes get thicker and battle depictions are important; as such, condensation is inevitable. Even the author commented about that limitation of anime media in the interview. Imo, better skip unimportant stuff than condense the more important ones, and also ending at the right place would place such a need as well
The first few frames were a flashback as a hook like I expected I made sure I watched the episode without any distractions and I would say I enjoyed the episode pretty well. |

It was paced nicely... but I think double episode would be better choice, it sort of felt like nothing happened in it.
paradoxically only face I had trouble look at was Ikta's one. Like the hell this version has any right call other people ikemen
