You need to re-watch episode 1. Before Freyja, Hayate didn't care for anything and was looking for a purpose in life, something that motivates him. He felt that when he flew and felt her trippy singing. After that experience, he realized what he wanted to do. It was thanks to her. Alto obviously didn't need Sheryl for years to start doing what he did in the movie (he even forgot their meeting ), but it was Sheryl who gave Alto the motivation to seek the sky as a child (she replaced the dead mother's plot). Sheryl and Freyja are fulfilling the same role as their catalyst.
