The issue with me isn't so much if they disappear but if they become too powerful and start having a say in the creative process where they try to tailor it for Western audiences. Two points with this. I've only started watching Anime and I am enjoying what I see. I love the attention to character and storyline but I also like the insane creativity that only seems to work in Japan. For for instance, Food Wars. It's a cookery program but they have blown it up out of all proportions where it is evaluated to akin to a gladiator battle. It works but it could never be done by a Western entertainment company. When Western streaming companies start messing about with the content of Anime then they will kill the golden goose. |

Crunchyroll upping monthly subs in Canada, Australia, Mexico and other countries, 12 total confirmed so far. I seriously doubt that has any correlation in improved quality of the platform, given their track record.

Edit: Merch friend explained it...Iowa's 6% state tax now applies to ALL US CUSTOMERS. Not just Iowa. Because Rightstuf is based in Iowa. International orders aren't affected by it but shipping costs are already huge anyway.

Shawne Kleckner, president and co-founder of Rightstuf, has quit.
I wonder which will come first, the price rises or the drop in quality. A hardcover copy of Crest of the Stars I ordered for them has a massive tear at the top of the binding. Still waiting for a response. I am now concerned this will happen again for the Summertime Rendering hardcovers which got delayed until December 27th.

Probably more apt to call it "cashing out" rather than quitting, I'm sure he had a nice payday when the merger/buyout went through. I'm still waiting on Summertime Rendering myself as well as a couple OOS mangas but my membership is still active so I decided to make one last preorder.

On the bright side, the next order my merch friend got through them came a month early. Replacement for Crest of the Stars novel was intact, Summertime Rendering hardcovers had no problems. But I do wonder about future prices.

Things look even bleaker in terms of access. I've recently realised there is no distributor within Australia now. Madman sold their anime stuff to Crunchyroll, Hanabee have shut down in Australia and Siren Visual wound down a bit over 5 years ago (feels like a near eternity with them being the only lot worldwide that licensed Monster and Nodame Cantabile in English in anime form, amongst other titles). So Crunchyroll are almost the only place to go now. Their markups on their own store are utterly cringe. At least reasonable prices still appear on Rightstuf (ordered Kodocha, Marmalade Boy, City Hunter OVAs & specials, Mononoke this sale period and secured Gunbuster quickly when it released at a fair price) but that's only because Discotek give that much of a damn about what they do.
Back in 2014 when Crunchyroll was becoming an option, I thought it would improve accessibility. Initially, it did. But in the long run, I think it's harming the industry more. Wonder how much zoomers will cry when they realise their fave titles are gone in 5 years or so and what they will have to resort to. But it's just dumb. Surely in a digital age, preservation should be relatively easy and an option. But then again, given how Nintendo handles that in games, amongst others...I'm not surprised. At least we were fans at the right time.

I hear you, but doesn't that enable companies to ensure fans never get to own a copy of the title unless they enable digital downloads? The streaming extortion/loss of history could be monumental and encourage the obvious alternative more than ever.

Throw in no Fedex shipping to Australia. Eff them. Turns out an electronics store had a 50% sale on local versions of a few titles so picked them up. Only 5 more titles I need to obtain, but 3 are subject to the Aniplex tax, so need to be tactical on them. And I'm not holding my breath on Summertime Rendering or Odd Taxi getting picked up outside of Japan. Unfortunately I still have to do manga via the US so Robert's Anime Corner, I guess.

All I can say so far is Crunchyroll's customer service is terrible. I have yet to receive a password rest link after logging in using my Rightstuf login ID. They even tell you to login and use the rest password link option. I've done so multiple times. Nothing. I get their messages when I submit a ticket. So why isn't the password rest link working? Only CR does(doesn't know) knows.

When there's only one game in town, they don't have to be held to account.
Interesting is that Discotek recently announced a Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha release, so there are some out there not losing sight of anime's history/legacy. It's getting hold of it that will become more difficult.
