It seemed to me that they were just going by logic. The captains knew that their platoons needed to have a given number of people, but they could only remember x amount of names, hence deducing how many were lost.

Now that I ponder on it for awhile after the episode, are there really three whales? They were fighting in the fog towards the end after Wilhelm eyegouged it and it got pissed. With next to no visibility, are these illusions? Did the whale somehow split itself into multiple whales? Or are there actually three whales and it it called for help?
I don't think there's actually three calamity causing level whales here. That's just too much. I think in all likelihood, the fog was used by the whale as a cover to either create illusions of itself or split itself in three. I'm leaning towards one of those because either one of those gives them a way to win if its figured out. Three separate whales would make sense given the level of cruelty of Re:Zero only if there was a reset involved. However, I can't see a reset at this point given the number of episodes left and that there's still the cult and Betelgeuse still left. Gah. So good. Always a sign something is well written where there can be so much speculation. |

So they did bring a nice amount of artillery.
Still love how all these troops are like "CHARGEEEE!!!! ... And now stop again. Ehmm whats next? *scratches head* Let's just stand around a bit again" Also in that last flashback scene I don't really understand what Willhelm is getting at. At first I thought "Here I am putting everything in training and proud of my improvemnts while she is just on a completly different level and probably laughing about my noobnes, that's humiliating", then he is like "You are to pretty to fight" and then it gets really wierd "I will take away your sword and you don't see the beauty in swords" What is going on?? I've always considered multiple whales as a possibility and now that that turns out to be the case they are in deep deep trouble. |

He said that because she is bound to fight due to her status as the Sword Saint, despite not wanting to. Her "face" he's talking about is that of an unwilling one. He wants to beat her in swordsmanship, and prove to her that she doesn't need to be forced to do something she doesn't want to.

I think that we only see the face, not the hair. Emilia is famous for featuring attributes that are similar to Satella, namely being a half-elf and her silver/white hair. No one has really said what has happened to Satella. Is she truly gone? Is she in between dimensions? Is she currently in spirit form? So far, it's probably a good bet that she is the one that summoned Subaru. However, for what end did she summon Subaru for? He believes it is to protect Emilia. If so, then why Emilia? Is Emilia going to serve as the host body for Satella? Then again, she killed Emilia in the last time loop. Or maybe Subaru's purpose is to get rid of all the magical beasts that Satella created? With 5 episodes to go, there is just enough time for 1 more reset, but I hope not, since so much has happened on this current reset.

Also, given how this series has so far defied most cliches I'm going to say its possible Willhelm isn't dead yet and the death-flag-flashback-montage was misdirection as that kind of thing is the most old-school of old-school death flags. Its an unusual situation where a series is so kill happy yet averse to by-the-book cliches it really leaves all options on the table. I have nothing to really say about the 3 Whales really. They're either fake, a deus ex machina is about to happen, or we get another reset. Option three seems unlikely given the remaining episodes though. |

Oh wow, Theresia is cute as fuck. I am in love, lol.
Anyway I don't think it's weird to understand why they were aware of the amount of losses. Platoons are supposed to have a very specific amount of people. Even if reality is altered in such a way that they left the city with incomplete platoons, if they're aware of that attack's nature, they can put two and two together. |

The animation flip flopped here and there, but otherwise it was a solid episode
Some of Wilhelm's dialogue didn't make sense, and it was enough to give people an entirely different impression of what the scene was actually about. I do hope next episode they flesh it out a bit.

He has been resistant to all of the whale's powers. He can remember people who have been wiped out by the fog, he was affected by it's mind bending powers, so I don't think he would succumb to any kind of illusion it would put out either. We'll just have to see though. Three whales would be almost impossible to beat.

On sidenote, wow how long has it been since we had a full intro and outro in one episode? |

This show, man, this show...
Since Episode 15 (or maybe even before that), this show has just been insanely good. And Episode 20 here is no exception. Before Episode 19, I didn't have particularly strong feelings about Wilhelm either way. So in just two episodes I have been completely won over to his character. What a cool badass, man! What an epic fight between Crusch's forces and the White Whale, with Wilhelm leading the charge in masterful fashion (taking nothing away from Subaru/Rem or Crusch who all did excellent tactical/distraction work; Crusch's long-range sword attacks were also cool). Episode 20's Wilhelm flashbacks were placed/timed perfectly. Each was long enough to leave a strong impression, but short enough to avoid detracting from the White Whale fight in the present. And Wilhelm's flashbacks certainly won me over to his deceased wife as well. Anyway, marvelous White Whale fight (so far!) and that shocking cliffhanger... woah... Re:Zero is simply amazing...

Really liked the episode...cliffhanger and all.
One of the most interesting things I found was instead of seeing the unseen hand when Subaru proceeded to utter his usual 'Return by Death' phrase to lure the White Whale, we see the apparition of Sattela(?) & I instantly made out what she said...or assume she said, so I went back several times to double check. I think I've seen enough anime/Japanese shows in my life with subs to make it out that she said 'Aishiteru' which means a pretty intense form of 'I love you', unlike 'Daisuki' which is a heavily affectionate & implied 'I like you'. So I had to make a quick edit on the scene by attempting to lip sync those words to the scene...and I think I'm right on the mark with that assumption. Also the context totally makes sense! Especially if you think about what Betelgeuse refers to as the Witch's scent...as merely her 'love'. Very interesting...I'm going to drop the video down for you guys, so you can see what I'm talking about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59u3MEHQ-JI Can't wait for next week. I'm actually interested in how Satella managed to choose Subaru specifically and pull him from Japan. A personality that's emotional but determined? A deadbeat with no attachment and is motivated to start from zero?
