Well I would've said the same about Kouhei Tanaka before Hyouka... but yeah they don't seem a match... |

Man, if anyone was in band back in school, this episode is an absolute nostalgic trip!
Kumiko is surprisingly the most no-nonsense, down-to-earth female lead KyoAni has ever done. You have a real sense that she genuinely loves music, and there's potential character growth out of her.

I was dubious before I watched this, but that first episode was really good. The drawing/animation was a joy as always, the story worked (somehow), and some of the voice-acting was terrific.
I thought the lead girl was beautifully played, by Kurosawa Tomoyo, a former child actress in TV dramas, who has been in the supporting cast of the music drama troupe Sound Horizon. She will turn 19 on Friday. She was Tina Sprout in Black Bullet, Sylphy in Amagi Brilliant Park, and Miria in Idolm@ster Cinderella Girls. And the enigmatic dark-haired girl who joined the band without hesitation was played by Anzai Chika (Nagisa in Kiiruminzoo, many roles in Chihayafuru, Chaika in Chaika Coffin Princess). I was riveted by her frustrated crying in the first scene -- even if the tears were drawn too big, as usual. Credit has to go to sound director Tsuruoka Yota, who seems able to get the best out of lesser-known seiyuus (e.g., Hirano Aya in Haruhi, everyone in K-On, and many people in his couple of hundred other shows). And I guess director Ishihara Tatsuya (Haruhi, Kanon, Clannad, etc.) and writer Hanada Jukki (Steins;Gate, Chuunibyou, No Game No Life, etc.) deserve their reputations. They got every feel out available from that bit of story, and kept things moving forward well). EDIT: I just checked a bit of 2channel, and reactions there are as generally (not universally) positive as here. There was some uneasiness about the role of he childhood friend guy. And someone very understandably worried that we would hear too much of the not-very-good band practicing.

Well, as may be expected, this show looked quite spectacular, and I liked the characters we've met, especially crazy band girl with the magic tricks quite literally up her sleeve. She was fun.
Am hoping we get more band practise and actual music, and less tea and cakes this time. |
