Perhaps now that we are at mid-season (or roughly so) maybe this thread would do well with an update to people's impressions of series now?
Here is a copy of my initial post: Spoiler for Initial post contents - Long:
Update now: A List: No real changes. Ikoku Meiro and Usagi Drop continue to be my fave of the season, with Hanasaku barely straddling the line between A and B List. B List: One addition here. Nichijou (carryover from last season) Kamisama no Memo-chou Dantalian no Shoka change 1: The iDOLM@STER (from C List to B List) - really excellent show! ![]() C List: Two additions here. No. 6 - I wish I could care more about the main characters than I do. I have been very close to dropping this one several times now. Everything else about the series is interesting, though, so I have remained semi discontented and on the edge for some time now. *grumbles* Mawaru Penguin-drum - hmm ... well, I like it a little more than No. 6. Oh well. change 1: Morita-san wa Makuchi (from B List to C List) - wish more had been done with this one. Really liked the OVA ... thus far this seems like a sorta tired re-hash of the OVA though. A pity. Imo it deserves it's own season and more loving attention. change 2: Copihan. Will give it a try. First ep kinda left me hanging and wondering what was going on, but why not give it a try? ![]() D List: No changes Mayo Chiki Ryo-kyo-bo Appleseed XIII Yuri yuri Blood-C R-15 Kamisama Dolls Itsuka Tenma no Kuro Usagi Nekogami Yaoyorozu **** The biggest surprise for me this season still remains The iDOLM@STER. Great series thus far! ![]()

Yea, that'd be helpful if you update.
![]() Name of Series: Kamisama no Memochou Episodes Watched: 7 Rating: B- Comments: It seems to have hit a rut in episodes 3-5, but started to pick back up again, and the latest story is interesting. My biggest concern is seeing what the show is intending on doing. Status (Keep/drop/stall): Keep Name of Series: Mawaru_Penguindrum Episodes Watched: 6 Rating: B Comments: This show has really come on its own, with a flair for storytelling while still maintaining humor with penguins and wtf scenes. Solid comedy, and budding plot. Status (Keep/drop/stall): Keep Name of Series: No. 6 Episodes Watched: 6 Rating: B- Comments: It's not the deepest anime around, but the concepts are solid and the buildup of plot and world are commendable. There's a bit too much err... fan bait of a certain kind that's occasionally distracting but overall, the characters are interesting-- Shion and Rat provide nice foils for each other. Status (Keep/drop/stall): Keep Name of Series: Usagi Drop Episodes Watched: 7 Rating: A- Comments: Anime still rocks, touches upon serious issues Status (Keep/drop/stall): Keep Name of Series: Higurashi Kira Episodes Watched:1 Rating: ![]() I'm not giving a letter grade because no letter has done anything to deserve being associated with this. Comments: Wtf is this shit; somehow my opinion of Deen actually managed to decrease. I'm only keeping this because I'm a Higurashi fan, if the 2nd OVA is as insulting as this, then it's going in the trash bin. Status (Keep/drop/stall): Stall Name of Series: Carnival Phantasm Episodes Watched:1 Rating: B- Comments: Now that's how you do a fanservice ladden comedy parody OVA. It's short but it's definitely sweet, though I guess it's a bit hard if you're not a fan of Fate/stay Night. Still Rin is ownage. ![]() Status (Keep/drop/stall): Keep

Name of Series: Kamisama no Memochou
Episodes Watched: 7 Rating: Good Comments: Putting this show under the Mystery Show genre is actually misleading. The show, like Gosick, does not focus on the intensive process of investigation that Detective Conan manages to portray, but it instead shows us the relationships of the NEET Detective Team and its newest member Narumi, who appears to use his heart most of the time than his head. So far, the current case is interesting enough. Status (Keep/drop/stall): Keep Name of Series: Ikoku Meiro no Croisèe Episodes Watched: 7 Rating: Very good Comments: I came for the scenery porn, I stayed for the story. However, you got to admit that seeing too much Yune-Claude interactions will tend to be repetitive. Fortunately, the additions of Alice and her elder sister Camille spices up the story. Recommended for people who have at least two heart-breaking anime series on their Watching list. Status (Keep/drop/stall): Definitely a keeper Name of Series: Dantalian no Shoka Episodes Watched: 2 Rating: Average Comments: Fantasy meets slice of life. There appears to be a pattern of events, but not enough to foreshadow a greater plot ahead. Well, it's still two episodes for me, and I hope there's much to this series than visiting mansions, Huey shoving his hand into Dalian's hairy chest and killing monsters with a lengthy incantation. Status (Keep/drop/stall): Stall (albeit slightly)

Nevertheless, I'll quote what I posted in the Higurashi subforum: Spoiler for Space:
It's one of the absolute worst episodes I've seen this year, and it's a Higurashi episode at that; one of my favorite series. Just unbelievable. Quote:
![]() Still got a massive backlog of stuff I'd like to see this season. I'll check back in when/if I get to catch up on them.

Huh. For some reason I thought there was going to be a separate, midway through the season thread. Because halfway into the cour is hardly a first impression, but whatever.
Name of series: Yuru Yuri Episodes watched: 7 Rating: 7/10 Comments: I take back what I said earlier in the topic; this show can't decide between focusing on the humor or the relationships between the cast. If it would focus its attention on one or the other, then it would really give this work the boost it needs, but I'm not holding my breath. However, should a surprise come in the form of an actual romance, it's a straight shot to a higher score.

Okay - as many of the series are beginning to come to a close I thought it might be a good time to revive this thread!
![]() Below is my initial post content: Spoiler for Initial Summer 2011 Post Content - Long:
Here is my Mid-Season Post Content: Spoiler for Summer 2011 Mid-Season Post Content - Long:
And here is the final wrap up evaluation. "A" List Ikoku Meiro no Croisee. My favorite series of the season - beautiful and well done in every single facet for me. So much so that it is going on my "all time favorites" list. Stupendous and highly recommended. Usagi Drop. For a long time it was a "neck and neck" race between Ikoku Meiro and Usagi Drop for favorite series, but towards the end Ikoku stepped up the pace a bit content wise and with the beautiful ep 4.5 OVA release.... Even so Usagi Drop was very well done. change #1: iDOLM@STER. Biggest surprise of the season for me and a really good slice of life show depicting the day to day struggles of individual "idols" who are just starting out and trying to make it big. This series is ongoing through "B" List change #2: Hanasaku Iroha. Finally dropped down to the B List, but it is at the top of the list. I really enjoyed this series, and even though it was frustratingly bad at times when it was "on" it was stupendous. Kamisama no Memo-chou. Thoroughly enjoyed this one - a solid story with solid characters, for me it was good from the get go. Dantalian no Shoka. As of the time I am typing this I have only watched up to episode 10, but I enjoyed this series. Nichijou. I am one of the fans of this series, and enjoyed the crazy, wacky, off-hand humor it shouldered from the get go. For me the highlight were always Nano, Hakase and Sakamoto. ![]() "C" List change #4: Busou Shinko: Moon Angel. Just began this one, having only watched 1 ep. But for all that it looks interesting. A sort of more ... umm ... militaristic version of the old anime Angelic Layer, which I really enjoyed. Will try this one out. Morita-san wa Makuchi. Have watched up to ep 12 of this one. Really did not seem to have much else to offer from the OVA, but I enjoyed the OVA, and this was simple 4-5 minute clips of light hearted, humorous fluff. Copihan. After 3 eps I still do not have an idea of what the series is about. But I am enjoying it - kinda in the same "league" as Morita-san wa Makuchi. "D" List change #5: No. 6. Well, this series more than anything else frustrated me. It's strength was the story setting and the plot. It's weakness were the two main characters. I heartily disliked them - especially Shion, at least Nezumi had some really lovely singing solos. Still, I was willing to watch it to the end, for all that. But I would neither watch it again nor recommend it to anyone else. Watched and Dropped List change #6: Mawaru Penguin Drum. I watched something like 9 eps of this before finally dropping it. For me the ultimate deciding factor was the character of Ringo. I disliked her extremes quite a bit - especially her cruel actions towards Shouma. I really dislike the "genre" of nasty, abusive people being passed off as humorous to begin with (esp tsundere young women to young males). Top that off with a dislike for what I felt to be pretentious artsy visuals (which I also dislike) and they contributed to finally pushing the series over the edge for me and dropping it from my "weekly following" list. I will likely steamroll the series when it finishes completely airing (it is a 24 ep series). All the ones listed below I watched 1 or 2 eps of before dropping them Mayo Chiki Ryo-kyo-bo Appleseed XIII Yuri yuri Blood-C R-15 Kamisama Dolls Itsuka Tenma no Kuro Usagi Nekogami Yaoyorozu

I see a lot of people in this thread dropping Kami Sama dolls when they really, really, Really, REALLY shouldn't haven't done it. You should give it a second chance. Really. Or you won't get a Christmas card from me this year.
Anyway, long gone are the days when I used to watch every anime that came out in a season. Aw well 9/10 to: Nichijou Kami sama dolls Ikoku Meiro no Croisee Stalled: Usagi Drops. Because I had already read the manga, not because it was bad. The series is excellent!! Kami sama no Memochou: because I don't have time. ![]() Next season I'll delude myself into thinking I'll have more time to watch my increasingly long list of stalled series (I won't).

Amen to that. Although I wouldn't give 9/10, but it was easily my favourite anime of the season closely followed by Mawaru Penguin Drum. It had most probably flawless execution aside from little missteps taken around episode 1 to 3 but that's just me nitpicking.
Too bad, I dropped Usagi Drop. Everything was done perfectly but I guess it's about the realistic setting and issues with kids. It was too deep for me. |

Completed:
Usagi Drop 10/10. Definitely the show of the Summer season. Setting was realistic, same goes for the characters, who were also quite likable. Ro-Kyu-Bu! 9/10. This show more or less broke with the tradition of it being fanservice-only, even it was still filled with it. The fact that the show delivered what the premise looked like was a definite plus. Would've liked a bit more development on the relationship between Aoi and Subaru (not necessarily romantic), but I loved the show anyway. Yuru Yuri 9/10. First episode was a bit on the slow side, but the gags started kicking off from there. Wasn't too keen on how Akari got treated as side-character more than a main, but overall, it only slightly hindered my enjoyment. R-15 9/10. Looks can be deceiving, and this show proves that you should never judge a book by its cover. Story was good, better than most other shows of this type and the characters were actually better than I had envisioned. Ikoku Meiro no Croisée 10/10. This show deserves a lot more love. Beautiful artwork, soothing BGM, and the show made a good attempt at showing us the cultural clash between two completely different people from completely different countries and how they worked to overcome that. Kamisama no Memochou 8/10. A lot of people seem to dislike it, I thought it was quite good. Not every episode made a whole lot of sense and I wasn't too impressed with the music at times, but I've seen worse from J.C. Staff. Morita-san wa Mukuchi (TV) 7/10. Main issue: the episodes were far too short. If a joke was set up, the episode was over before we got to the punchline. Still, the gaga that did deliver made the show worth watching. Not yet completed: Dantalian no Shoka Nekogami Yaoyorozu BakaTest 2 Mayo Chiki! Still ongoing: Idolmaster From previous season: Nichijou 8/10. Too many episodes that were a bit lacking in jokes, or had jokes that flew over my head. The show became more interesting after Nano transferred into the school. Hanasaku Iroha 9/10. Good visuals, (mostly) likable characters. Steins;Gate 10/10. Easily the best Spring show of this year. Conclusion pretty much answered all questions from episode 1 and I don't think I would've accepted any other ending. Dropped: Kamisama Dolls (I don't think there was much I liked about it. I watched 3 or 4 episodes, then I couldn't stand anymore of it). On Hold: Blood-C (dropped it at first, but might give this another go when it's done).

Unfortunately most of the summer shows I chose to watch kind of ended up bombing or with me losing interest in them before the end. I guess here's a break down:
Name of Series: No.6 Episodes Watched: 11 Rating: D+ Comments: What the hell happened. It started fantastic for the first 2 episodes and had me thinking for sure that it was going to leave an impact by the end, but instead it proceeded to immediately meander, the characters personalities were all over the place and seemed to only serve at the whim of the plot, and that ending singlehandedly dropped my rating 2 whole letter grades. I'm not sure how you fuck up a show this bad even with only 11 episodes and 11 novels to adapt without deliberately trying to, but here we are. That's the last 11 episode sci-fi show I ever watch week to week. Name of Series: Kami-Sama no Memochou Episodes Watched: 7 Rating: B- Comments: Show started to lose me part way into the 4th's arc (strange since he's my favorite character) and as the show just kind of failed to ever quite match the quality of the hour long opener, but I hear it picks up again and fully plan to get back into it shortly and see the end. I just wish every episode could have brought what the first one did in terms of tone and looking more like an OVA than a TV episode. Name of Series: Sacred Seven Episodes Watched: 12 Rating: B- Comments: I picked this show up simply with the expectations that it would be a fun action show with quirky characters and a bit of garness thrown in and that's exactly what I got. Expectations met and no real complaints. Name of Series: Mawaru Penguindrum Episodes Watched: 10 Rating: B Comments: It seems like the show has finally stopped meandering a bit in favor of moving forward with it's plot and character arcs and the time is good since all the characters seem to have been introduced and the second half is about to start. Ringo is still by far the standout character for me, but thankfully she's no longer the sole saving grace as I start to warm up to characters like Shoma who just seems like a good guy with the worst possible luck and even Himari who actually has a character now thanks to getting her own backstory episode. Things are really looking up for this show going into that 2nd half. |
