With the mention of alternate dimensions I couldn't help but think of Soushin Shoujo Matoi from last season, which I think did that better. Of course, it may not have done it better solely within the first episode, so I may be judging this harshly. Also I don't think this show is trying to go for the same sort of atmosphere, so comparing them is probably unfair in the first place.
Anyway, this feels like a decent beginning. It felt like a bit much to have Mana drop her gun and fall back, paralyzed in fear when the monster stoof up again near the end. Maybe she was supposed to have tripped on the rubble, but if so that wasn't exactly obvious. The OP kind of spoils that the girls will be getting upgrades. I mean we could have guessed that they would need to, given how ineffective they were in both of the fights we saw, but it might have been nice for them to have left us at least a little bit of surprise for when it happens, you know? Anyway anyway, the girls seem decent enough, although they haven't all been clearly identified in my head yet. A single episode isn't really enough time to clearly establish the personalities and identity of five different girls, and the fact that there were a bunch of other side characters taking up screen time (some of whom were also girls who happened to resemble some of the main characters, at least at a glance) didn't help. Assuming this show follow standard patterns for this sort of thing however, we should get to know each one over the next few weeks, so I'm not too worried. The one with amnesia is obviously plot-relevant. I'm sure we'll learn more about her, and the mysterious figure behind her in the OP, later.

Whose bright idea was it to combine slice of life and action? It doesn't work. I got no indication that the very bland looking monsters were threatening anyone apart from the fighters, and the first half of ep 1 was completely relaxed; no tension, sense of threat, or sense of purpose built up whatever. Focusing in part 1 on the heart-power genki girl who would usually lead a magical girl team, then sidelining her in part 2 for the quiet troubled girl who would normally be a Homura-style lancer, felt rather confused as well. Not liking it so far.
