And why did the whole episode look so much uglier than previous ones?

Well, I've come around to accept that 'no one actually will ever get hurt' is such an ingrained rule in this comedy that it allows in-universe characters to be pretty nonchalant about mortal danger. Otherwise, let's face it, having a humanoid dragon with lesbian tendencies, a mean jealousy streak, a psychotic love for you, an absolutely dismal view of the rest of the human race, and the power to bring about Armageddon live at home with you would be as terrifying an experience as they come . This really is a case where suspension of disbelief needs apply. The entire premise of this show is based on people thinking "nah, it'll be fine somehow" in the face of Eldritch realities that would scare the shit out of any sane person and possibly make them lose their mind entirely.

Just his age, probably. Quetzalcoatl appears to have been cast in the role of "that one aunt", who is perfectly comfortable with her own body, but unaware of, or indifferent to, the "discomfort" she causes with it for others. Females have boobs, hers happen to be rather prominent when in human form. Young boys have to come to terms with them. Few ever do. He can't get away from the private space invading aunty he summoned. She who doesn't realise, or choses to ignore, that she has overstayed the welcome of the initial invitation. Part of the extended family now and that's how she behaves. He can occasionally seek comfort in the bossom of her bosom buddy, Kobayashi. A more flat chested model of a female being. Shouta seems to prefer her. He's a bit queer that way.

I didn't dislike the artistic choices made for this episode. On the contrary. Thought it was all very nicely done. Pretty.

This post could explain why the episode could appear to some viewers to be uglier than previous episodes.

... it makes a strong case that choices, not ineptitude, might account for any changes between episodes ... and I'm assuming that you use such words as "could" and "appear" to indicate that old adage that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some viewers could have been so focused on melons that they might have overlooked potato animation.

True, it's easy to suspend disbelief at Kobayashi's lack of fear, since Tohru's power level is unbelievably high. It was a bit much for Kobayashi to near get blasted though. If the near-miss had been taken seriously a bit, their subsequent touching scene could have had added elements of forgiveness and reconciliation. Still, there was quite a lot going on in that scene already.

An episode full of Kanna HHNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGG damn it was good.

We saw some details of the background story of Kanna and why she acts like that, seems like she improved her behavior by a lot reaching an understanding of Kobayashi's situation.

At the same time Kobayashi experienced something new in her life and she discovered that was great.

Episode 9:

Nice sports festival episode. I really like the excitement of the buildup from Kanna wanting Kobayashi to attend with Toru to the actual competition. Ruby and Kanna took the spotlight imo this week.

Good stuff. I really like the chemistry between those two. Between those, we still got some humorous moments from that chaos dragon and Quetzalcoatl.

I think Elma is an order dragon, and Tohru was a chaos dragon until she meet Kobayashi? It's funny as Elma looks like the sea serpents associated with primal chaos.

Was expecting Kanna to use dragon power in the race, but no; nice message that playing with friends matters most. Kanna's family background was interesting, her friend is too cute, but too ero-ero.

Of course, the manga chapter that this episode is based on has its own own unique chaos dragon moment,
Spoiler for manga:

Ito masumi-san's work in the anime's ost is brillitant. It matches the quirky moments but also captures the serious parts too. Would buy the soundtrack come April 12-14th.

KANNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! SO CUTE!!! AHHHHHHH!!!!!

Ok, now that I've finished channeling Riko I can say this was one of the best episodes yet; Kanna is just so endearing, and her relationship with Kobayashi is aboslutely adorable and heart-warming. Such a good kid~

Gotta say, I was preparing myself to not see that much of Riko, with the whole focus being on the family part, but my god, am I glad to have been wrong That last part was also really cute, and I found myself cheering for Kanna in the end. And that lick was a pleasant surprise.

Poor Elma. I completely understand the pain of choosing between ice cream flavors.
