Well, I'm asking a because I have some ideas for upgrading Brian's Flak Cannon. Not to mention changing the name of the weapon when it gets a certain upgrade.
Names: Flak Cannon >>> Alloy Blaster >>> Tera Blaster What do you think? NOTE: Brian's "terrible" when it comes to melee combat, so he uses shotgun like weapons to compensate for it. |

I don't think it's terribly accurate to say that shrapnel has better penetration.
It will puncture the target no matter what, but shrapnel is only really useful in bombs rather than guns. Metal bearings on the other hand have more penetration because of higher force, heavier more destructive better for guns. |

It's not really finalized yet, but here's the general breakdown.
Flak Cannon: Fires a mixture of energy-infused shrapnel and pellets. Alloy Blaster: Fires plasma-infused shrapnel. Tera Blaster: Fires plasma in the shape of chunks of shrapnel. The Plasma's so dense that they take in the form of Shrapnel and can do damage similar to metal shrapnel. And the heat from the plasma itself will add more damage. Don't like full auto. Higher possibility of collateral damage... |

On shotgun ammo
1. Shrapnel/Flechette Fragment metal or randomly flinging bits. They do horrible damage to flesh and hard to be treated because recovery is hellishly hard, however against armor they do JACK SHIT. Even tiniest plating will protect you from them. Their effective range also suck, we re taking about less than 10 meter. 2. Buckyballs/pellets Also commonly called buckshot, usually made of lead, although harder metal can be used as well. They do damage by multiple impact spread over an area to increase accuracy and shock-induced lethality. Lead suck at armor penetration, but either way, ball shaped ammo is bad on that no matter the material. Make no mistake though, they aren't as short ranged as video game portrayed. Duck hunting commonly done at 20 meter range or beyond. 3. Metal slug Not the funny tank, but very much metal chunk made into big ass shuttlecock shaped bullet. They possess massive momentum and good power transfer, thus the 'blow torso' effect commonly seen. They're not very good against armor, especially when made of soft lead. High velocity tungsten is possible, however overkill and expensive. 4. Saboted Armor Piercing Instead of big round, pick thin, dense dart (Tungsten, usually) and put it between lightweight, self-disposing sleeves (usually hard plastic/polymer). They pierce thin armor like paper, but the resulting flesh wounds is less impressive than Slug or buckshot (they tore clean hole) Also got the longest range of all ammunition, upward to 300 meter. 5. Grenade I wish I'm kidding, but if you really want to ruin someone day, high explosive 19mm ammo is aviable.

Now I'm re-thinking what kind of shots will be used/fired when Brian's Flak Cannon becomes his Tera Blaster.
Sabot could be best, but I want to have it retain the damage capabilities of shrapnel at the same time. I don't know guys, what do you think? |

Sabot ammo is not high temperature ammo, Bayformers fail at research again. Sabot is a pair of sleeve used to hold sub-caliber (as in, smaller than barrel diameter) dart in place
Anyway, the kind of ammo you propose is strictly close range, against armor it's pretty much a point blank weapon. White hot shrapnel at long range will soon become rusted flinging bits that bounce and shatter on hard surface.

I believe the problem is that your terminology is fundamentally different from ours. Plasma cannot be shrapnel and shrapnel cannot be infused with plasma. Shrapnel means it is a solid and Solid is one form of matter while plasma is a whole 'nother. You can say the intense energy causes the solid to immediately enter the state of plasma but even then the properties of each state that remains is hard to determine. You are working with the logic of science fiction but half the techwankers seem to be working with textbook science.
