How stupid was Light to put himself in a scenario like that? There was literally no reason to confront Near in that enclosed space. But Kira being overly arrogant, he needed to experience his final victory up close. In the beginning, Kira was content to achieve his victory in anonymity. Honestly, why not just defeat all his real enemies first then declare himself to the world when nobody can oppose him? I thin the writers of the manga really missed a huge opportunity.

If we speculate, if he didn't die, the possibility is he would've become the god of the new world, but he would've gone mad with power, relentlessly killing those that opposed him, or even turning his eyes on petty crimes (like littering). From the perspective of those in the series, ending him there and then really was the only option. From a writer's standpoint, he had to die to keep the story from becoming uninteresting, because the whole series previously was his quest for what was essentially world domination, it would've become stale if he'd beaten Near and gone unopposed.
