Aoie_Emesai: Since your post was 50% about the groups and 50% inbox, I split it in half and put each half in their proper thread.

Got two silly questions.

1. What is the origin of nosebleeds in anime? Why do they show a nosebleed when someone see something perverted?

2. Is there really a thing like woman only subway in Japan?

Not a whole subway, or even trains, but women-only cars, yes. There's even a Wikipedia article on it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women-only_passenger_car.

I don't know if I'm correct, but I think that nosebleeding is a result of flushing, whereby the arterioles near the skin surface undergo vasodilation. The shunt vessels and connecting veins are constricted so that the superficial arterioles are dilated, causing a rush of blood. This rush of blood may cause arterioles that are more fragile (i.e. near the sinus) to burst, and spill blood in the case of a nosebleed.

Since sexual arousal causes flushing, I guess it's somewhat related.

Groping in crowded commuter trains has been a problem in Japan; according to a survey conducted by Tokyo Metropolitan Police and East Japan Railway Company, two-thirds of female riders in their twenties and thirties reported that they had been groped on trains
lol... 2/3... I can't imagine something like this happening here. You'll most likely end up with a nosebleed by a punch should you try something like that here

And meh.. Japanese authors sure have a weird way to express that

Thanks for answer guys

Weird way? well, it is in fact hard, considering the huge amount of usual "images" they use as messages (the big red nerve, sweat drop etc.)

There aren't many "images" you can do with the sexual excitement, considering that blushing is too general, and much on the "embarasment" than anything else.

Since it is a standard, it is really hard to determine the origin, since most -if not everone- know pretty well its meaning

This kind of things is basically the same for cartoons and comics, i guess.

It happens irl too! These 'images' are merely an exaggeration of real life behaviour so such 'images' have to be based on observations to begin with. I'm sure there are explanations ^^

80% of females in general have been sexually harassed one way or another. I forgot where I found these statistics.

Really? In the Wikipedia article on nosebleeds (is there anything that doesn't have a Wiki entry?), there's this comment:

"In anime and manga (Japanese-originating animation style), it is very common to see sexually aroused characters suffering nosebleeds, sometimes intense ones. Sometimes referred as the Japanese Slapstick, this rarely occurs in real life, but is based on a Japanese "old wives' tale", which states that becoming sexually excited can cause nosebleeds.[citation needed] Such occurrences are generally played for laughs and signify "loserhood" and/or virginity. This conception regarding nosebleeds also exists in Chinese culture."

I wish someone had filled in the [citation needed]. The author is obviously covering him/herself by adding "rarely." Arousal is not included in the article's list of either "local" or "systemic" causes for nosebleeds.

Usually arousal moves blood in the opposite direction from one's nose .

I wonder if the level of crowding on Japanese trains makes it difficult to identify the perpetrator. I recall seeing a piece many years ago about there being train staff whose job was to push people into the cars. Is that still true? Was it ever?

Hmm, hope I'm in the right thread here. Two-part question:

1. Is "mochi" used to describe all types of rice cake? Or just certain types of rice cake (like the long strips, small balled up ones, etc.)?

2. My mom brought home honey and sesame seed-filled mochi home today (I'm a total happy camper right now ); do they make and sell this type of mochi in Japan, or is it a Korean thing?

I've always assumed that "mochi" is used to mean "rice cake" in general, and that they do sell this type of mochi in Japan... but today a friend from Japan told me she'd never eaten honey-filled mochi before. Would it be because "mochi" describes a specific kind of rice cake that is never filled with honey, or because they don't sell it in Japan? Or just that she doesn't get out much? [*now goes back to sucking on the honey-mochi*]

i take it that it would be hard to catch the one doing the groping if you are packed in like sardines ~ its not like you can freely go around and yell "who just touched my ass" ~ imagine the embarrassment which most people will try and avoid O.O

I don't think mochi refers to all rice cake... IMHO, mochi is a food made from rice flour with very flexible structure and rather sticky...

the Avatar must be saved with a proper image extension (such like jpg, gif, etc)
in addition, your avatar cannot be bigger than 50KB.

show which picture you were trying to put, but most of the time, it is because of the later condition.
