I'll try not to worry too much about rehashing characters, though with Erza he even used the same name pretty much. As for the whole nakama thing, I think I can live with that; just, the whole "make 100 friends" goal might be a bit much. [I don't mind the nakama thing most of the time.]

Well, technically he did the same with Sieghart and Jellal, but managed to make them completely different characters. I won't rush to judge, but I do hope this doesn't turn into a villain 180° -> friendzone formula, first because that's what FT ended up being and also because I disagree with ^, Mashima can't handle a huge cast. Although FT did not end up as bad as BLEACH did (going on like 30+ chapters without Ichigo), his character air time was aaaaaaall over the place.

Speaking of Bleach, did you read the new LNs and short stories? There are two that came out after the manga ended which are pretty interesting. You can find translations and summaries here: https://www.reddit.com/r/bleach/comm...fmh/?context=3. Happy reading (if you're still interested in Bleach).
Anyway, there are times when one would want a certain villain to join the good guys' side. If Mashima only does it at those times and with only those characters, it's still fine. Mashima likes to reuse Plue. I find it fine, though. And he did manage to make them different across mangas even though he used the same name.

Recruiting villains has a time and place. Major rules of villain enlistment:
1) They can't be the big bad. Getting them on your team just makes everything up to that point less important, because something HUGE must come up in order to team up with them. 2) It mustn't be due to misunderstandings. Villains with flimsy convictions make for allies with zero personality i.e. filler space. 3) Albeit obvious, something has to change before they join the good guy crew. Having allies that could still potentially want to kill you only works if they're not really allies, but partners for a one-time thing. 4) It should never happen RIGHT at the end of the current arc. It degrades the character in question and makes them a shoe-in hero whose misdeeds are gradually forgotten, Best villain to be recruited so far has been Shuda in Rave Master; serious threat, had reason to jump ship, didn't do so for quite a while and he fundamentally changed his relationship with Haru. Reina is a close second, for obvious reasons. As for Plue, he was only important in RAVE, with just a minor appearance in FT, so I don't mind him. I expect Happy to have a similarly small role in this manga. |

Plue was a Stellar Spirit in Fairy Tail, wasn't he? Canis Major if I'm not wrong. So while his role was minor due to how many appearances he had, he was kind of important since Lucy had his key for pretty much the entire series.
I agree with you about villains turning and the time and place of it in the story. Of course I wouldn't say to have the main villain of an arc turn.

So this Happy actually lost his real body in an accident and got a robotic body afterwards. And the planet he's from is Exxid. Exceed. Exxid. Hm.
I'm curious about that Space Pirate who looks exactly like Erza. Why is she after Shiki and what's her connection to the Demon King from Granbell?
