Tree diagram was destroyed in July, so based on that statement above, tree diagram had calculated the weather for august. Spoiler for more:

I'm always surprised some decent AMV creator hasn't made a video with it yet. As for the episode, I liked it. I think the bit about Mikoto's plans to plant a fake calculation in Tree Diagram was rather clever and filled in a bit of a plot hole for me. It explains why she ended up falling in despair much better. However, I would say that several times in the episode the pacing felt off. Not really bad, just not the same polish that the other episodes have had. I also question the decision to play the ending song over the top of Mikoto's discovery of Tree Diagram being destroyed. It seemed to be unfitting background music to me. Because of those things I'll drop this down to an 8 out of 10. Still very good and high quality, but not quite as good as other episodes.

Personally, I liked the episode, though the slow pace definitely deducts some points. I guess the director really wanted to end the episode at that "revelation". |

Man this arc has just been hell for Mikoto. It's just getting worse and worse at this point. She was nearly out of options in the first place and now her plan has been ruined. Not that she wasn't going to destroy the Tree Diagram herself, but she needed to use it before that point.
Just a lot of suffering going around. The question about how the researchers would feel meeting their own clones kind of confused the reaction Mikoto had earlier. While yeah seeing your own clone is unsettling it's their fate that really drove that response out of her. Is interesting seeing Touma get more involved in this arc alongside what Mikoto is going through.

For the purposes of fictional back-story the fundamental computational difficultly of predicting the weather in detail has been underrated. There are parts to the total system that are chaotic, thus results are extremely sensitive to small changes in the initial conditions (or errors in the computational model).
Weather prediction was one of the first things tried with digital computers, along with simulations of the hydrogen bomb (at the Institute for Advanced Study). Fifty plus years later we've got 10 day forecasts that are reliable for a couple of days. This is one of the scientific details, like conservation of energy or angular momentum that gets swept under the rug in favor of having characters with god-like (or demonic) powers. On the other hand, the portrayal of Academy City as a scientific utopia with a dark underside may be a more considered sort of irony.

I do notice how much more consistent & better the character designer is now compared with those past seasons. Everything looks so nice and shiny in Railgun S it makes me want a remake of those other anime adaptations. XD |
