Reviews are out.
OpenCritic Metacritic The reviews are exactly as I expected: A polarizing, indulgent, love it or hate it experience. Which is, essentially, as as expected Kojima work. And that alone makes it a preorder for me.

Every review I have seen or read so far makes it sound like this game is in the same vein as BotW, a purposely barren open world where the main gameplay aspect is the adventure and traversal with a great amount of freedom to reach your destination.
This definitely seems like a game that you have to play to be able to properly form your own opinion since reviews won't be able to tell the whole story.

Kojima talked a bit about the connection theme and the philosophy behind Death Stranding in this news segment by BBC Newsbeat.
On connections: - (Some gamers)don't feel like they fit into society or their community. (This game) is to (help them) realise others like them exist all over the world. On the philosophy: - There are only positive likes (and) no negative interactions (for you to convey)...Attacks and violence seen online these days are out of control; this game was designed for people to take a step back and relearn how to be kind to others (by connecting). |

I said I'd wait for reviews before deciding, but they aren't really helping
And it's not like this month is totally barren like the rest of the year for me. Guess I'll wait for the opinions of players on DS and the reviews of those other games before deciding which one to get.

I feel like I'm reading RDR2 reviews again. Most people praised it as a masterpiece, but there were few critics who felt like its realism prevents genuine enjoyment and treat many mechanics as a chore rather than fun.
And as much as I liked RDR2, I wasn't very surprised about its criticism. I believe DS is the same and will (ironically) divide people. |
