The time has come. And the veredict on Hikari is... not bad I can't help but to think it was totally on purpose that the first thing the series does is introduce her dad. Like others have already mentioned, she seems to be more the hard worker type with a disadvantage rather the super special one, and it is nice she just wants to join the witches and kick butt from day one. Sure, the journey so far seems pretty much the same, but the hero's attitude makes a huge difference, and I'm liking Hikari so far.
With my worst fear out of the way, this was a good start for the return of the witches. Quote:
I wouldn't mind to be wrong, though. Just having the girls going around in with bare legs is enough service to me. That said, I did like that bath scene with the sisters. |

I am already sick of seeing ignorant comments by people in various places that accuse Hikari of being a "Yoshika clone" despite some of the most obvious differences, both personally and background.
Otherwise, it does feel like there just may be a little more "military" in this series than in Strike Witches, which felt overall more carefree all things considered.

Not saying the brave witches is bad, but I prefer the strike witches more. I didn't feel the charm I felt watching the strike witches long ago when I'm watching the brave witches now, something is lacking or maybe its because the whole team havn't been introduce yet. Just to say In the end I still like all the witches series.
I thought that there won't be any mention of the strike witches 501, Sakamoto and a glimpse of Miyafuji on the newspaper good enough I really miss them. Hikari seems to have the same element like Miyafuji, never give up/work hard and the miracle will happen. So I can't wait to see Hikari's relationship with other team member and what miracle she will bring at the end.

I've been out of touch with Witches franchise for a long while.
I like what I'm seeing, so far. This is quite a different take on the Witches-verse compared to the previous installments. For one, the fanservice is less blatant, shove-in-the-face type, which is how fanservice should be executed, IMO. First minutes into the episode, and I'm already sure Hikari is NOT a Yoshika clone. Overall, a great start. The "World Witches Series" label somehow really makes me excited. Does it mean we're gonna explore more fronts in the Witches-verse in the future?

Well whaddya know. Strike Witches with less annoying and less obtrusive fanservice and characters who aren't (apparently) carbon copies of the 501st. Yoshika is a magic savant with no military demeanor, while Hikari is military trained with weaksauce magic. Both have a stupid amount of stamina and guts though. I was actually surprised that they didn't recognize her on that newspaper article since by the time of the second series and the movie she was already well known in the Fusou armed forces.
In any case I'm more interested in the squadron relationships and dynamics since that was what kept me interested in the series. I still don't understand the planet's chronic pants shortage however.

I can understand the Yoshika-clone concerns when the show was announced and we were just getting pictures. Visually...it's there. But, they did a good job defining Hikari as her own unique person. In a sense they really went out of her way to create numerous differences. No dead family members of note, not inherently talented, also wants to chase a family member (but so she can fight along-side her), and basically realizes her success purely from effort.
It was nice that she got through because of all her failings to this point. Is more than used to running around after falling into the ocean so a bit of rain won't really impact her very much. Hikari probably actually runs her regular course whether it is sunny or storming. Sure she only pulled through on that crossing the ocean move because it was a life or death situation, but she still did it. Solid start. Both siblings seem like nice characters. Actually giving the older one a battle scar, so she's hardly immune to injury.

Okay, I've watching this and it was good. Takami has some Alicia vibe on her while Hikari's determinations reminds me with a certain guy from Brooklyn..
I don't know if Yoshika joining the 501st thing was classified for public..

I suspect that part of the reason for that difference in her design was to prevent that. Yoshika ran the ragged edge of being a Mary Sue at times, avoiding it only through personality, and the fact that she generally only used her ridiculous powers to heal and to create a ginormous shield. Hikari is both openly stated and shown to not have much magic. More, she's been training with striker units for some time, and is definitely not an instant expert with them. And she's going to be joining a group that's made up mostly (if not exclusively) of aces. I suspect she's going to spend a lot of time struggling to catch up, feeling like she's dragging the team down.

Well, there's also the other stuff, like the first person Hikari sees in the episode is her dad, whereas we all know what happened to Yoshika's dad. I almost chuckled at that.
And the Striker Unit that Yoshika's dad left(or made, can't remember) for her, so it was like, okay, you have a high magic level, you got your customised Striker Unit, so you must become a Witch. Here, I'm actually surprised they are showing an academy to train Witches, which throughout the SW series, I always had the impression that Fusou didn't had a lot of Witches in the first place, mainly because their place isn't under threat of the Neuroi. We saw a few others (like the one in the movie, forgot her name) but not an academy scale. |
