I wonder if we will see anything about the period between the end of the OVA and the opening of episode one. I can guess why Chise decided to sell herself into slavery, but I'd like to see those years between ages ten and fifteen.

What a beautifully illustrated show this is! Those scenes in the library, especially after the stars come out, are just gorgeous.

That's because by that point, which is many chapters in the future, they are mostly on even terms, relationship-wise. They both undergo this little thing called character development over the course of the series.

Yes, that OVA is some of the prettiest anime I've seen outside of the theatre. It's stunning.

Question: I want to start this but I wanted to ask if I have to watch the 3 OVAs first or can I just start the series fresh?
Just to let you know, I know zero about this series thus far other then having seeing the manga everywhere in bookstores and knowing there is a lot of hype behind it.

You'll do just fine starting with this series.

You do not have to watch the OVAs first. In fact, some would advise you not to watch them until afterwards, because they are set some notable time after the start of the series, and can give you certain spoilers and changes in perspective compared to watching the series from the start.

(Yes, the OVAs are billed as a prequel, but they're a prequel framed as a flashback, so they start and end in the "present," which is some significant amount of time after when the series starts.)

this is from a culture which wrote The Tale of Genji, after all. The idea of him essentially acting like a father figure to mold someone into a generation-younger bride fr himself (possibly more, as his own age is uncertain) is a Japanese Classic and more than a little creepy to modern western audiences. I'm watching, but it is something I'm wary of.

I'll quote what I said in the manga thread, though I can't go into specifics:

Is the manga better than the television version of this? Worth reading or no?

It's been a pretty accurate adaptation for the first episode. That should make it that you should read it. Like, right now.

I don't understand what you mean. It's an accurate anime or should I read?

Waay too early to tell. Regardless how the anime turns out the manga itself is pretty good, but it is up to you to read it or not.

He said you should read it.

At the same time, how can one say that the manga is better after just one episode? makes no sense.

Ditto here. I've heard a lot of good buzz about the source material for this series and I enjoyed the first episode (I particularly liked some of the fantastical elements) but the set up strikes me as kind of skeevy.

Elias is not human. What he thinks of "a bride" and human reality about familial companionship, marriage etc. is not particularly congruent. You'll need to learn something important about Chise that's only been hinted at to understand just what Elias was buying when he bid £5 million at the auction for her. A marriage partner is the least of it.

I can't think of much of the manga where Elias' surprising statement about Chise being his future bride actually drives the plot. There's no harem hi-jinks, no confessions on either side, no lewd hand-holding, Valentine chocolates etc. I have the feeling the mangaka came up with the title first ("Yome" = bride) because it sounded good and then she had to backfill Elias' declaration into the story to make it fit.

You'll be pleased to hear the fantastical elements continue and multiply as the story develops. The weird is strong in this one, the visuals impressive. Enjoy the ride.

I'm actually a lot more interested in the world building in this shown than in the relationship. I like that the development of Chise and Elias' relationship is done at a steady, believable (well, as believable as a relationship between a skull headed non-human being and a teenage girl gets) pace. It's the backbone of the plot, but not the day-to-day face of the story.

The story is interesting and a little disturbing. The heroine has suicidal tendency, and she only has three years to live. OVA somehow explained her reason for getting herself killed, then the bone magician provides the shelter to her. In the magical world, the heroine is classified as "Loved Child of Night", 夜の愛し仔(スレイ・ベガ). Maybe the story will explain meanings of her name.

The background is amusing, since the stage takes place in England, and the magical creatures are from Gaelic mythology. Today, since Anglo Saxon migration, Gaelic mythology only exists in Ireland.

By the way, Chise needs to have a good sleep; her eyes are surround by the dark circles.

The mangaka steals, ahem, borrows from a lot of European mythologies, not just Gaelic.
