What's your Profession?
Software Developer / Information Analist, with a specialization in Legacy systems (zOS Mainframe & AS/400) Your Current Status Recruited whilst in college by a major IT company, and still working for them. After 5 years working on site with a Government client, I recently transferred to another client (Travel industry). This due to sheer lack of work at my previous assignment. What made you choose it? I started my IT studies with the idea to get my degree, and afterwards get an another degree in a field of study that I actually liked. My IT degree was supposed to be a safety net, nothing more. However, during my graduation year I received an offer that I simply couldn't refuse. Also, I had come to realize that the other degree would be a waste of precious time and money, since it held no value at all at the current job market. As a junior developer I decided to be as flexible as possible, so I got thrown into the dusty world of old technology. Looking back, I can't say it was the wisest career move I could have made. Now I'm basically stuck in Legacy. Are you happy with it? No. I'm stuck with those outdated systems. Due to my experience level, management refuses to move me to another IT segment, since I would be to expensive to start there at a junior level rate. Also, most of my co-workers are quite old so the company would rather keep me in this area. This to prevent a lack of knowledge in the near future. I do get a nice paycheck, and I love all the extralegal extra's. I just don't know whether those make up for being stuck in a job with barely any future or challenges. I have to be realistic: Due to my work history, the lack of jobs in my area of expertise, the lack of training at my current employer,... my current value on the job market is lower then my current pay. So I could only be paid the same or more, if I were to find a job in the same area I'm currently working in. Unfortunately, the demand is very low. How do you see yourself in the future? Either I will still be doing the same thing, as a mindless drone. Or I might suffer some mental breakdown Or I finally stop caring, quit my job and do something completely different

What's your Profession/your planned course to take up in college?
I'm an undergrad biology (concentrating in genetics) student hoping to graduate next year and attend grad school. My plan is to earn both a biotechnology degree along with an MBA studying stem cells. Your Current Status. I'm in vacation right now since it is summer. I tutor biology during the school term. What made you choose it? I use to be a nursing student, but a year and a half ago I changed majors into biology. I thought my classes would be similar and reach most of the major requirements, but I was totally wrong. I still like to work part-time in the medical world to help humanity so I choose biology. Are you happy with it? Yes and no. I'm definately a lot happier compared to being stuck in the nursing program. Rooting for all the nurses, future nurses, and students that tried to be nurses. Yes because my fellow peers are wonderful people in the sciences and I like to understand how life sciences work in general. No, since there are professors out there to eat students. How do you see yourself in the future? College Professor Lab Manager A loving husband and dad with a beautiful awesome wife Stem cell researcher

What's your Profession/your planned course to take up in college?
Unemployed Mechanical Engineering Grad. It's surprisingly hard to find work in the field, at least in Ireland. Your Current Status. Sending out applications. It's... tedious. What made you choose it? I don't really know. I guess I liked Math, Physics, and Applied Math at school. And I thought it would be a secure source of work. Are you happy with it? Well, I hated studying Engineering in college, (though, frankly, I hated college period). Then again, work is different then studying, I'm hoping I enjoy work more then I did sitting in classes. How do you see yourself in the future? Professional Barista Technician? |

What's your Profession/your planned course to take up in college?
Soldier. Vacillating between History, Philosophy, or Psych in college. Your Current Status. Amazed. Simply amazed at the low standards held by the military are. Still only an E-3, but I'm working to change that. What made you choose it? Both grandfathers were in the military, my uncle and father were as well, same with my mom's boyfriend. Only thing that really felt right. Are you happy with it? Yes and no. Yes, because the camaraderie is probably one of the best feelings in the world. No, because there are so many stupid people that I've wanted to bash their heads in with the butt of my rifle multiple times. How do you see yourself in the future? If I stick with this, I'll probably go for a commission as soon as I can. If not, I'll probably try and get into private security. Or take over the world, depending on how things look.

What's your Profession/your planned course to take up in college?
Only went to college for one semester ... long story. :\ But have been with a small company for 24 years now working in various departments. Your Current Status. AM the "default sys admin" - meaning I know more about computers than the other folks and this take care of them. What made you choose it? Umm ... I just "knew" that I wanted to work here in my last year of high school, and the then boss offered me an "office job". Are you happy with it? Extremely. How do you see yourself in the future? In the same place, actually - maybe with a little more responsibility ... one of those gradual increasing responsibility things drop by drop method.
