All the Megaman games as well as Megaman X 1 have some of the best Soundtracks of all time. For example, Storm Eagle's theme is one of the best boss level themes ever made. Here's a remix:
Spoiler for Storm Eagle:
And of course, the very famous theme of Dr. Wily from Megaman 2 Spoiler for Dr. Wily:

I like soundtracks that match the scenes/moments they play in and also sound great outside of context. These are the soundtracks I feel accomplish that:
Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 Guilty Gear series and BlazBlue F Zero X Ace Attorney franchise (especially the first game) Mega Man X/Rock Man X Okami Sonic 3 and Knuckles Sonic CD (JPN/EU version) Donkey Kong Country Castlevania:Symphony of the Night Teenage mutant ninja turtles 4: Turtles in Time (SNES version) Chrono Trigger Parasite Eve Last edited by GreatTeacherKen; 2010-11-03 at 04:15. |

Hmm from the top of my head ... :
I love Nubou Uematsu. Masashi isn't bad either, but it takes time to conquer my heart! So I like most of the Final Fantasy soundtracks by default; specially VI to X. I dug XIII's, too. Also like the versions of the Black Mages Don't think I need to give examples ... people know these. Also love the soundtrack of Obscure 2. Has some really haunting pieces (like "Lumen") and always established a perfect mood. But also had kickass pieces like "Waltz of death". Spoiler for samples:
Olivier Deriviere did an amazing job for this game. Also an awesome coop game! Horror for two :P Also liked the Ost of Beyond Good & Evil. That was a soundtrack with a wide variety and always fitted the scenes. "Akuda House Propaganda", "Slaughterhouse Scramble", "Fear the Reaper" and "Dancing with Domz" were my favourites. Spoiler for samples:
Shadow Hearts (1, 2 & 3) had a nifty OST. A good RPG should have everything for every mood and they do. Spoiler for ALICE:
Uh almost forgot because so recent - Heavy Rain. I'm a sucker for orchestras XD Spoiler for main theme:

Many Rockman games across the various series in the franchise have truly outstanding music, though what has always impressed me about the series is that, while yes, some compositional similarities are bound to crop up over so many games, each soundtrack feels different. I think this contrast is probably sharpest between Rockman 2 and 3, and Rockman X, X2 and X3. Listening to those OSTs (and I listen to them in their entirety, often), you just don't really run into songs in one game that could be placed in the other.

I think that of all the recent works, Nier Gestalt & Replicant has been an amazing thrill ride and is going to jockey with FFXIII for the soundtrack of the year. Okabe combined with Emi Evans on vocals is fantastic since her ethereal voice carries its way through the soundtrack rather nicely.

There's a lot of great video game music out there, but aside from a few nostalgic songs from Zelda and Mario, the first to come to mind is Chrono Cross. I love Yasunori Mitsuda, and the opening theme and the world map theme are simply beautiful. It's one of the only games with music that I really enjoy for reasons other than nostalgia and attachment to the storyline.

It kind of still irks me that people say the FF7 music is so great... I wonder which came out first in the US. Special mention for Power Glove too; their albums of game music redone in metal are totally worth getting. They're good enough to make my favorites playlist. |

I am very VERY surprised that no one said Halo 3, one of the best videogame soundtracks of all time, composed by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori.
Also, I have been at the Distant Worlds concert for FF, and Nobuo Uematsu was sitting just a couple sections to the left of me. Nice guy. |
