Summer 2009 Anime Review Thread: Post Your Opinion and Grade

Spring 2007 had more shows that I enjoyed overall, I seem to remember (although Fall 2008 actually holds the record for this, I think I was consistantly watching like 12 shows). But only two were shows I would consider favourite list material: Gurren Lagann and Sola. Summer 2009 managed three: Bakemonogatari, Umineko, and Spice and Wolf II. And that's the most I've ever discovered in a single season on "first pass" - meaning I haven't gone and watched a lot of other people's recommendations yet.

Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (theater) - 10/10

Summer Wars (theater)- 8.0/10

Bakemonogatari (still on) - 8/10
- good story, likable characters, unexpected twists
- but the too many blank screen method is making me think are they too lazy to animate?
- my favourite character: Hitagi

CANAAN (finished) - 8.5/10
- the best show in summer for me
- but can be better if the story is smoother
- my favourite character: Canaan

Spice and Wolf (finished) - 7.5/10
- interesting characters especially their interactions
- but the story lacks excitement and Horo had no chance to show her true form
- my favourite character: Horo

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (finished) - 8/10
- realistic and fresh, good drama and emotional secenes
- but some episodes are too draggy especially the ones with "is he dead?"
- my favourite character: Mirai

Umi Monogatari (finished) - 6.5/10
- cute characters and touching story
- but the pace is too slow and the fighting very inconsistence
- my favourite character: Kanon

Umineko no Naku Koro ni (still on) - 7/10
- interesting story and twists
- but the characters are not likeable and the pace is a bit slow
- my favourite character: Kanon

overall, i feel summer is weaker than spring that has titles such as Phantom, Eden of the East, K-On, FMA, Saki, Tears to Tiara, Sengoku Basara etc

+Fabulous animation, art style & action sequences
+Nice tempo to start the story
-Complicated relationships
-Not a very satisfying ending

Princess Lover: 6.5/10 (Finished)
+Gorgeous female characters
+Brilliant first episode
-Oversized breasts
-Story drys out in final third
