Ep 5
Hmm. Less of a focus on mountain climbing this ep and more of a glimpse into Aoi and Hinata's interpersonal dynamics. All good and nice, I guess. Still wondering when the new characters are going to start trickling in....

Ep 6
Okay, back to the main ingredients of the series here! Not a bad ep overall, but I must admit I totally could understand where okaa-san was coming from. I would have reacted the same way if my adorable (what...14 year old?) daughter suddenly announced to me she had the intent to climb a mountain in the middle of the night out of nowhere, though I would prolly have asked who else she was going with and asked for lots of other details after I calmed down some. Still, it was nice to see Aoi finally getting into something to the extent of initiating stuff on her own. ^^

I'm rather a bit surprised they're planning to head to Mt. Fuji this early in the series. This is a 2-cour series, so I was kind of figuring that would be like the finale or something. There are undoubtedly tougher mountains out there for them to climb, but Fuji is unquestionably the most famous in Japan.

Yup, I was also surprised they're planning to climb Fuji so soon. And at night to boot! That's the kind of adventure I would have saved up for the grand finale.
Let's see what the next episodes have in store for us.

Maybe they will meet the new girls now. Honoka, voiced by Tamayura's Tomo-chan, Hikari voiced by Tamayura's Maon and Yūka by Horie Yui who voices some interesting characters. I wonder if the new girls will climb Mt. Fuji together with the other four girls in the end.

At the same time, as a famous and relatively non-technical mountain, I do find it pretty interesting that the series is introducing Mt. Fuji at this point because that could indicate that it's pretty serious about the mountaineering aspect. As Hinata's father mentioned in his case, Fuji was even his first mountaineering excursion so I wouldn't say it's inappropriate for it to act as a 'starting point' in the story rather than being pushed back as a tremendous obstacle. The interesting thing is, perhaps, that Mt. Fuji has two faces: both the highly popular and commercialized "on-season Fuji" which is even accessible enough that you could call it a general tourist attraction (climbed by children as young as 6 years old), and the deadly and isolated "winter Fuji" which has sent even many experienced climbers to their deaths. In a world as deep as mountain climbing, (vanilla) Mt. Fuji is just the beginning. Though I can't say I imagine the story approaching things of the latter level (especially so long as the story retains the setting of Aoi and co. being 1st year high school students), it will be very interesting seeing just how far they go. I wonder if I was associating Fuji with the "final obstacle" simply because of its height and the fact that it is well known, maybe using a reference point like Everest. Everest is also the tallest and dangerous, right? Soooo....
But after thinking about it a bit the two are not necessarily the case. Why couldn't a taller mountain be easier to climb and a somewhat shorter one be far more dangerous?

Sure, but it's a lot less safe.
It's not that I expect Fuji to be a super-difficult climb for the girls, but it's the name that even non-mountaineering folk are going to recognize, you know? If you ask most people to name a mountain in Japan, Fuji is pretty much your guaranteed answer. It seemed like setting something famous like that as a final goal would be a fair way to keep the series open to both mountaineering fans and folks who aren't into that but who can appreciate the simple pleasure of the show. Anyway, episode 7 is finally translated: Last-second save by Aoi! I was really worried she was going to ask her mother about "sexy swimsuits," because I think we have a good idea by now how her mother would react. "A swimsuit you can't even see!" I knew someone was going to go with the school swimsuit, and Hinata was certainly the first choice.

She is one of the four who are featured on the mountain climbing treks, and is the most knowledgeable and experienced about the subject per se. But she is not one of the "main characters" in my opinion. There are only two of them - Aoi and Hinata.
And by the by - this series is actually 24 eps this time around. ^^

Ep 8
Okay...this series is really going to kill me. The overdose of adorableness is arghworthy at times even while being quite engaging. This ep was mostly prepping for the Fuji ascent, including stuff like purchasing food and drink for the climb and the normal nervousness experienced, etc., etc. And really, the main character is the one who bears the blame for much of the kawai levelbeing cranked too high. The ep ends with all four on the bus on the way to do the climb in the early morning hours, so...next ep should finally start the climb.
