I thought it worked well. It's not like the Manga didn't take a little bit to hit its stride. Though I was expecting a bit more sound emphasis/vocal changes on the reaction effects. I'm thinking a bit more of how it was handled in Nozaki-kun recently.
At the same time, the first part of the series has a bit more Rom to the Rom-Com formula. It isn't until certain cast members get really fleshed out that we get pure comedy for a long time. So our expectations might be skewed a bit, given where the Manga has been for a while. I think the voice work was really well done. I wasn't sold on Shiragami at first, but after she shifted into Kansai-ben, it made a lot more sense. Some of those oddities that get lost in the translation effect, but it shone through really well in the second half of the episode. Our valiant trio of friends, though, was really, really well cast. Shima especially. Shimono Hiro was perfect for it, especially in his whiny/never-gets-the-girl voice. (Too bad THAT scene isn't coming) The only real worry I have, at this point, is Koumoto-sensei's voice. It just seemed really flat, and she'll have a decently sized part. The voice actress (Nitta Emi) has done fine in the two roles I've heard her in before, so it might just be the way they're having her play the character for now. I imagine there will be some tone shifts. I think the OP gives away enough to know that "the other side of Akari" will be around. (I'm really looking forward to Akane. The voice work there will be hard, but it could easily be the breakout character of the series, if they do it right.) |

Well, I haven't read the manga but that totally worked for me. Like a cross between Nazo no Kanojo X and Majimoji Rurumo. Very sweet, with a premise reminiscent of a 90's anime romcom and visuals to match.

Ep 01
Hmm ... well, I may be one of the few who enjoyed this anime adaptation more than the source material - at least regarding episode 1. This first ep was just plain enjoyable. Not great or anything, but it felt kind of ... wholesome, I guess? Sort of an "old school" feel to it that is different for me than the manga comes across ... at least to me. Was also not expecting the bgm to jump off the screen as much as it did. Good work. Anyway - will defintely give the next few eps a try.

Thanks, good to hear. I had a little sleeper vibe from this one, partly based on the concept art and partly on the fact that the manga has a good reputation. I think it's turned out to be a very interesting and charming show.

Just pointing out - I did watch it on the base of your post too! Not the review which I didn't read to save myself from spoilers, just the header alone which felt positive enough. I was looking for some sweet comedic show to watch together with my gf in a season where I'm going to be torn between gritty mobsters, hot blooded shonens and pervert terrorists . We watched it back-to-back with the new Ore Monogatari and appreciated it .

I like the female protag already
It is rare enough to hear Kansai accent for female lead and I'm curious about how he is going to hold all the secret anyway, the interaction at the classroom is heartwarming and I enjoy it I don't read the manga yet but it looks like the animation is lots better than in manga |

Episode 2:
Lol, did this episode remind anyone of Men in Black? Nagisa as that tiny alien revelation was funny. I think the show retains its humor when it comes to the comedy aspect and facial expressions. Still getting used to Youko's voice though... IRRATIONAL

Poor Asahi found himself in tough situation.
Shiragami really likes to eat... Now even Aizawa... an alien... weirdness.. Pretty unbelievable stuff going on. That Asahi.. he's just too nice. Will give it one more episode before my final decision.

Indeed . Though the general setup - school where one weirdo pops up after another - rather reminds me of Haruhi Suzumiya. I wonder what's next - I'd guess maybe the journalist girl is a Yokai or a Kitsune? She surely looks evil enough .

And the "Russian Chou" scene went perfectly. They're hitting the physical comedy really well. |
