As someone who rarely gets past 26 episodes of anime, getting past 50 for me is a miracle. That said, I finished all the episodes of LoGH (was it over 100?) AND I rewatched like the first 20 since the subs I saw first sucked so I was totally lost by then (hint: watch Central Anime's subs PLS infinitely better than what I saw). So yeah, it was THAT good.
Just note this isn't an action focused piece. It's basically a story about a clash between differing political ideologies and also the troubles each poilitical ideology has within, set upon a backdrop of space wars. Closest thing I can think of it is crossing MaoYuu/Log Horizon with Starship Operators/Crest of the Stars, but even that doesn't do the show justice. And I actually liked Tytania, unlike most other people. It's not the masterpiece LoGH was, but for someone who was starved of LoGH, it was a fun ride. So yeah, so am hyped about this, remake or not. Doesn't seem that hard sci fi is a go with anime in recent years barring that Space Pirates show (which turned me off due to practically all female cast), so I'll take what I can.

There's really no point in trying to compare LoGH to Yamato, Gundam, etc., it's a completely different type of story.
Basically, LoGH is like The Romance of the Three Kingdoms* IN SPACE with less Chinese people, although one of the leads is one. The author, Tanaka Yoshiki, is a massive fan of history, and while technically sci-fi/space opera, LoGH plays out as a history book/historical novel (which is where the anime got the somewhat documentary style from) with intelligent observations and navel-gazing about history and human nature, how humans form history, repeating and changing patterns, the relative merits of forms of government, and so on. It's the kind of story in which you recognize elements of current (and less current) real world events - even ones that the author couldn't have possibly known about because they happened long after the novels were written (in the '80s). It's one of the very few stories I know that actually come close to grasping the complexities of history. *(the original novel, that is) And then there are the characters. They're awesome (even more so, I think, in the anime than in the novel, because there they have a face and a voice and everything*) and they are the unquestionable driving force behind the story and (the world's history in general). They're very colorful, the leads and other main characters (of whom there's a lot) all have distinct personalities and histories and flaws and issues (oh, the issues), they're charismatic, and it's very easy to like them and to grow attached to them. Most people eventually end up favoring one side over the other (SIEG KAISER! ), but there are awesome characters on both sides, and they alone would be worth reading/watching the whole thing. *Although fyi, the anime designs are used in the official LoGH encyclopaedia and various other materials, so they're actually quite connected to the novel. Which is one of the reasons why I'm so torn over the prospect of new character designs and voices. Also, LoGH is eminently quotable. The story is peppered with great lines, original or reappropriated - Yang gets the most of them, but everyone has some. "Victory or death? No. Victory, or even more thorough victory!" |

For those still pondering about watching the originals, here is a beginner guide
http://i.imgur.com/tPDrNpW.jpg I agree on the comment about the OAV. While 110 appears to be intimidating, it's not that high of a cliff to climb. All that time used for shows that have been dropped or all those days without your season's favorites to fill could be easily be used to watch some episodes of LoGH. I have semi-marathoned the show back in 2011 during the airing of Madoka and I also used some of those days job hunting. If I could do it, ANYONE CAN do it. |

Indeed, 110 episodes isn't much, especially in light of some of the heftier shounen titles out there. I did my watch in two-hour bursts way back in 2008, then four-hour bursts during weekends. A great way to fill in the time if nothing during the season catches your eye.

You know... i never know that the entire series was on ova. I was always under the impression it was a tv series. Then again, I original start watching this in the 90s as vhs fansub up to the middle of season 2 and then finally get the whole set as vcd in chinese sub

Also, it's a bit strange that the list doesn't mention the manga separately. It's not bad, actually? Well, the first 12 volumes that is, I don't know how it's been since then. It's not a very faithful adaptation, and it's a lot more playful than the novel or the anime, but it's fun in a "let's not take this too seriously" way. I mean it has sexy lady Rubinsky (sorry, Adriana Rubinskaya), and Rosenritters in drag. But I hope the new anime adaptation won't be based on the manga, it's fun for what it is but it's not really "LoGH as I want it"... |

To be honest I hope they're not going to try to imitate the OVAs in any way, including the cast. If they're doing a reboot then it should be a complete reboot with a fresh outlook, otherwise why do it at all? people would be just reminded of the OVAs which were already perfect.
Especially when it comes to the cast, I think there's no point in trying to make the characters sound similar to the original cast. Those seiyuu were the characters, there's no replacement for Horikawa Ryou, Tomiyama Kei, etc. (Besides, they should be careful who they choose as Oberstein - he ruined Shiozawa Kaneto for me, after I've seen LoGH I had Oberstein flashbacks with every Shiozawa role. So much for stuff like Ai no kusabi...) |

Huh, when I heard that the OVAs were licensed I thought this was shelved... apparently not. 2017 is the 35th anniversary of the novel's first edition.
(At this point I'm pretty much like "do whatever you want just please don't involve Arakawa Hiromu". Or Okada Mari, I guess. And don't try to dumb it down into a shounen franchise (ahem, ahem). And don't try to imitate the OVAs, you already did that with Tytania, and it sucked.) |

I'm both excited and scared about this remake.
One thng for sure: new staff and cast have a VERY difficult task. I especially don't envy composer, though. It's hard to compete with guys like Mozart, Bach, Beethoven Tchaikovsky, Wagner, Chopin, Dvořák, etc. |

Well this will be interesting. I've heard a lot of good things about this show and after having it on my To Watch List for about 3 years, I was finally able to watch the first episode a few months ago. It didn't grab me at all and I decided to leave it. Maybe this remake will be able to sell it to me.

To be fair, Mari Okada is rather good when it comes to adaptation. Zetsuen no Tempest is one of the finest and most entertaining anime out there. Rozen Maiden, Basilisk, Popolocrois, Black Butler, Gosick, etc are all solid works by her. Usually, Mari Okada’s series suffer when she has to write her own story (which is why I’m a bit worried about the upcoming Gundam series ).
Also, why would anybody badmouth Hiromu Arakawa in this LoGH thread? It's not like she's writing a manga adaptation of it or interested in space anime, right? Please take your grudge to Arakawa somewhere else . Anyway, if IG is not really serious working on this Reboot and not give it their all, I'd rather re-watch LoGH on Blu-ray.

I was mostly joking when I mentioned Okada, but anyway...

More to the point, this story really doesn't fit (nor does it need) her style of writing. One mistake this reboot can make is building a core staff on the basis of big names to build hype, and if you ask me getting a big-name writer with a "listen to my song!" attitude wouldn't do a whole lot of good for the end product. I was referring to Arslan. Nothing wrong with Arakawa, but she wasn't the right person to do that adaptation, which pretty much ties back to my point above re: big-name staff who may bring the hype but may not be the best to adapt this particular story. |

Did you drop Arslan Senki anime that's airing now? It is good, and many people enjoy the fine story by Yoshi adapted into TV series. And nobody is complaining hard about Arakawa's artistic-choice except for haters and novel/OVA-elitists so far.
