Okay so, here's a step on it:
1. Create a new layer on top of the others 2. Click CTRL + A 3. Select a color for your border 4. Click Edit >> Stroke 5. Set it to 2 or 3 px when asked, and click the option to Center 6. Press CTRL + D Voila! A border! |

I would suggest that the BG should match and complement the render. You did it in your second sig but you can put more time into erasing those spaces between the strands. Nice hair work on the first and third though, you're getting there. Doesn't it look better with nicely done hair? Don't give up
And the type tool is your friend. Use it |

and and Aren't the best choice. The vibrant red on two of the avatars aren't the best choice either. If you fix the things i mentioned up, you'll have a pretty decent bunch on avvies. Great job! xTrace |

But hehe to stay on topic. The second guy from left, his head still had a somewhat odd shape. It's dented in a bit... Other than that, much better than your first one And i would go without a border to.
