Got a new ace tanker badge today, after four matches in a new tank:
Awesome tank but then again I have been gifted with good MM after five matches. Sadly enough I can't say the same with my Ram II, four matches, one win, 0 kills max tier of the four matches: 7, 7, 6, 7. In other words my Ram II is cursed. It was okayish in the Tier 6 match, I was comfortably penetrating a KV-1S upfront while he was waiting to reload. I also bought the AMX 12t, a scout tank with manoeuvrability of a heavy tank. That doesn't really work...

That came after, was also awesome.
Had a game in the Locust against mostly tier VI's and ended up being the last one alive and while capping the enemy flag I managed to take out 2 other lights and a TD while they all attacked me at the same time. I eventually died but I think the other team where pretty surprised they where given such a hard time by a tank the size of a small car and its probably the first game I've had someone on the other team compliment me... Edit: I just got one shot killed in 2 games one after the other by the SAME guy in a grille and both where bullcrap shots with the first being at the start of a match while I was traveling at full speed in the T25....just wow...

Been looking for some guides to higher-end mediums like the T-54 and Lorraine 40t in preparation for eventually getting them (and the Lorraine is close enough), but gotten zilch aside from the general "use them as second-line support". That's... not very helpful, and the US forums are positively toxic, with many of the so-called unicums dismissive of those asking for advice (apparently anyone who isn't at the 54% mark is still considered a baddie in their forum parlance).
So we have this weird situation where people who want to be better can't ask those actually are better for advice, because they don't want to.

The T-54 is (if you've ever played a Type 59) a heavily armored medium with very good hard stats, but moderate to bad soft stats. It's got pretty good accuracy nowadays, is fast, and its turret will bounce even gold shells. The DPM is good but not monstrous, and you want friends. It's a good initiator and attention getter - it's got good troll armor for bouncing lower tier tanks if you angle and/or keep your distance - this is where you get the "second line support" advice from. Despite the armor (~230 or so-ish effective frontal plate), you want to keep your distance to keep from getting shot in the side or in your hatches. If you're too close, the taller tanks will shoot down on you making your armor weaker. You've got enough armor to be a heavy tank that moves like a medium tank to tier 7/8 tanks, so bully them around if you can. E-75/M103/IS-8 etc. will make mincemeat from your armor so play like the medium tank you are supposed to be against them. If you're playing with friends, the T-54 makes a good escort because you're fast enough and dangerous enough to warrant attention. Keep the enemy distracted but don't spend health uselessly - the T-54's relatively low alpha means you will lose peekaboom fights. Scout with your troll turret and fast speed in the early game, use your mobility to flank and create local superiority in the mid-game, and try to snowball the situation into an overwhelming superiority in the late game. That applies to all tanks, but the T-54 can be treated as a tier 8 heavy tank that goes really really fast and is a tier higher. You can club noob Pattons and E-50s, but the speed of the T-54 means you can get in trouble really easily. Like Soviet doctrine, the T-54 relies on numbers to overwhelm more than sheer firepower - you never wanted to be outnumbered in a T-54 since in the majority of situations, if you go in a straight up exchange against a similar tiered tank, you'll come off even or worse if you're against a good player. Good players will take advantage of your poor gun depression and low alpha damage to create situations where they can either get free hits on you or come out on top in a volley, which combined with low Soviet tank HP pools means you'll often come out on the worse side. Lorraine is like a AMX-50 100 if you've ever gotten one, only a tier higher and worse in almost every way. Never played one or platooned with one much so can't give much advice. It's awful at scouting, don't play it like you play an AMX-13 90. Flank and swoop in when enemies are distracted for some autoloader fun, but don't push in ahead of yourself because despite French speediness, the Lorraine is very fat and soaks damage like a sponge without being able to handle it. Keep a very close eye on the enemy turrets, the moment you see them turn to you, calculate if you can get another shot off, but I would err on the side of caution. 300 extra damage in 1 shot doesn't match the 400/490/750 a heavy or TD might dish back to you. The more health you conserve in the early and mid game, the more you can use to trade with in the late game where you can just soak the shot and then finish off the enemy. Sorry if I'm not very helpful, I don't have much experience with these tanks (T-54 I last played in closed beta, never played Lorraine but have played AMX-50 100) Hope this helps! |

I've had a similarly pleasant experience in the T25 although MM has been a little harsh with me over the last few games but that aside its a pretty good tank and surprising quick in a straight line.
No Ace mastery badge yet but I'll get there eventually.

Mow: Thanks for the advice, though it seems that there's only one significant change to the T-54 since the last time you played, and it's a new last gun. It's a 100-mm with trades lesser default penetration (201, which is really low for a tier IX gun) for more accuracy and quicker reload time.
As for the Lorraine, I did hear that it suffers from something else aside from being as tall as a King Tiger: having an aim time that's longer than gaps between shots of its autoloader mag, which makes it horribly inaccurate if you're moving even a little.

Just had an excellent 17 game session with Irenicus and Ghostie-Eye, where we won 13 games out of those. While the majority were tier 5s, Irenicus and I (Ghostie had to run for about an hour) also did 6, 7, and 8 tier games with good results.
Oh, and welcome the newest addition to my garage: the T-54! Had two games so far, 50% standing. Don't have the best guns yet or the final engine, but I got the turret at least. The grind to the gun with better aim is a heck of a long one though, so maybe I'll just invest in free exp for it.
