The target individuals are the two Meinokawas. “Two, no matter where the summoner and vessel are when the Incense Grenade detonates, they will be automatically moved to the center of the created Artificial Sacred Ground.” “Three, the Artificial Sacred Ground will be constructed relative to the surface the Incense Grenade is touching when it detonates. This goes beyond the floor or the ground. If the Artificial Sacred Ground is created relative to the wall or ceiling, those inside can freely run around on the wall or ceiling!!” Basically, what happens is that the Artificial Sacred Ground reestablishes where the "ground" is depending on where the Incense Grenade is thrown, and it pulls the target Summoner/s into the ASG automatically. It will be disadvantageous to the one targeted by the grenade thrower if he or she decides to switch the battlefield to somewhere that's not conventional. This is mainly the reason why Higan has been looking for a way to escape from the harbor while keeping herself away from line of sight; virtually anyone can drag them into a summoner fight as long as Incense Grenades are available.

My issue was more along the lines of the fact that I was having trouble visualizing the Meinokawa sisters standing upside down on the bottom surface of the monorail car.

Um... the exposition doesn't seem that complicated... to be honest... and I'm sure they explain the battle system over time. I don't think it'd be that hard for them to do if they had explanation diagrams while showing the scenes. Also, anyone who enjoys Kamachi style stuff likes exposition so I don't see the problem. People who don't like info-dumps just like simple stuff. There's no point in them watching a complicated premise if they don't want to know how things work anyway.

Exposition works fine so long as they have good visuals to go along with it.

^ Sayonara Zetsubou sensei is 100% exposition. Yet, I never yawned a single time while watching it. The reason is because it usually talks about subjects that touche people in their everyday life through the antics of over-eccentric characters and Shaft Powerpoint presentation gimmicks. Basically, it talks about something interesting that is also presented in a very appealing way for some viewers.
Mahouka anime is just bad at it, though. I fell right into Morpheus' arms the instant he started explaining how his Magic Jamming technique works, dammit, and that one was rather short. (and this is why I dropped every single episode that didn't have "heavy Onii-sama actions in them")
